Most disrespectful on the phone. Didn’t even make it to doing the work.

I will write a real review later but this man is a scammer. Everything the previous ladies said is what happened to me! Do not hire him!

I wish I had seen the previous review before we hired Mr. Thurston to remodel our kitchen and bathroom. We had the exact same issues. His contract states he wants 1/2 of the estimate upfront with the remainder at the end. We paid him as requested. The first day he worked maybe 6 hours, the next day about 20 minutes, the following Monday he worked a couple of hours then texted and called to state he could not work on Tuesday because his wife was upset that he worked so much (?) but that he would be there Wednesday morning. Tuesday night he texted after 10 pm to again state he could only work a couple of hours the next day (Wednesday) because his wife was upset he worked too much and she had a doctor's appointment he wanted to go to. The last night he worked, he laid some of the tile in the kitchen. He didn't want to use spacers but did after we insisted. The tiles are STILL not even, some will have almost no grout line and others have a large gap and the tiles are not lined up straight (lines are crooked). He forgot to cut out the AC vent even though it was marked (by HIM). The cement board was laid so that there are almost 2 inch gaps between them. This means he was going to lay tile over air. Even I know this will result in tiles cracking due to absolutely no support under them. I too wish I could post pictures. We had to tell him we no longer needed his services. We received no refund even though we paid him $400 over the estimate for the just kitchen and he didn't finish it and didn't even start on the bathroom. Basically, we paid him about $212/hr for work we're going to have to repay someone else to fix. I guess his scam business practice is to get paid almost $2000 up front, show up and work less than 9 hours, get the homeowners so fed up with not showing up to finish the job and doing substandard work that they fire him and he walks away with your money. Oh, and he and his wife both stated he was licensed. I cannot find on the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation website that he carries ANY license. Do not hire this man.

Mr Thurston showed me a fake license the first day we met and even stated on his contract that we both signed that he is a licensed contractor and now he has admitted to me via text that he is unlicensed. I hired him on 10/8/2015 to completely demo and renovate my bathroom. The demo went well and was completed in less than 2 hours. He actually never spent more than 2 hours each visit there from what I could tell. He was already behind schedule on day one, but I am told that is how it is with every contractor. Job was supposed to be completed by 10/17/2015. On 10/16 cement board and tile was still not up. Tile was finally put up about a week behind schedule. The tile job was not professional at all. The wrong materials were purchased and used by Herbert. Not a single tile was centered or laid correctly per our discussions. The grout lines and spacing was absolutely terrible and it looked like spacers were never used. I wish I could post the photos. There were huge gaps in many areas. When I asked the contractor about them he said it would look better once grout was in which is unacceptable. I have done several tiles jobs in my life under a professional and never would any professional tell their client, yes it is screwed up and looks bad now but it will look better once we grout it. I cannot be sure but I fell as if the pictures he posted of his tiling work on Thumbtack (the site I hired him from) were not his own because the tile job he did for me was extremely bad in all aspects and looked nothing like his photos. The paint job was even worse. He painted over tape and nothing was sanded or puttied prior to paint. The contractor stated his "helper" did the paint job and even admitted a 3rd grader could have done a better job. The tile needed to be completely demo'ed again and redone. I fired Herbert Thurston and came to an arrangement that he agreed upon for a refund of only they money that was given to him. This would mean that I would be out about $200 for materials and also it did not include the increase in price for fixing his botched job and also for the cost of the electronics of mine that he ruined in the process by cutting tile in my house. During the job he did not cover anything in the house except my tv with one of my own blankets all other electrical equipment was uncovered and completely covered with tile dust. Now 3 gaming systems of mine do not work. He was originally supposed to refund me by 10/30 but then asked for an extension to 11/6/2015. I agreed to the extension to avoid court but now he never paid. Since then he has tried multiple times to get back on the Thumbtack website from which I hired him but each time Thumbtack support emails me asking me if he has settled with me and I tell them no. He agrees that he will refund the money to me each time he tried to get back on that website to the customer support team but does not. Mr. Thurston is not a licensed contractor which you can verify on the DPOR's website. A total loss of over $1,000 after all damages and court filing fees. Do yourself a favor and check out other contractors.
