Foundation Investigations | Apr 2014 | After Hurricane Sandy in 2012, JDH Engineering was called upon to assess structural damage to hundreds of Atlantic Coast homes and businesses flooded by the storm. Cracking in walls and floors, soil and subgrade erosion, and general undermining of foundations was quite evident. Here in Michigan, flooding, heavy rain and snow, and improper site drainage are continually working against building foundations creating these same problems. In many cases, the expertise of a state licensed structural engineer is needed to determine the causes and severity of an observed deficiency such as cracking or movement. These causes are often not apparent to the untrained eye. Once the investigation is complete, repairs or retrofits can then be designed, if necessary, giving the owner confidence to move forward with the appropriate corrections. The team of professional engineers at JDH Engineering has extensive experience providing this type of inspection and making the proper judgments regarding any necessary action. The same methodical standards used in wide-scale investigations can quickly be put to use for any individual assessment with the goal of addressing the current conditions and preventing further damage. | Islip, NY | ||
Superstructure Evaluations | Apr 2014 | The record Michigan snowfalls of 2013/2014 played a role in numerous costly superstructure failures throughout the state. Not only were roofs affected, but also entire buildings including joist and beam framing, walls, columns, and trusses. A harsh winter is not the only challenge to a safe superstructure. High winds, leaking, insects, wood rot, masonry decay and rusting steel all have a damaging effect. JDH Engineering puts their years of experience to use surveying different unsafe conditions in homes, businesses and pole barns year-round. While the initial cause of the damage may be obvious, its effect on the overall integrity and stability of the building requires the knowledge of a professional structural engineer for the most complete assessment. Our historical presence in Michigan has given JDH the knowledge to evaluate numerous types of construction for numerous types of defects. On-site observation is just the beginning of the solution JDH provides. A staff of licensed engineers is then able to provide reports or drawings outlining a cost-effective, efficient solution. | Ada, MI |
