"Unbeatable savings and services...." this is what the website claims, I guess it is a play on words. here is the story. my house was under contract. I was informed through inspection that my outdoor electrical outlets did not work. the contract is an all cash offer so things were moving quickly. I felt this would be a relatively easy fix. I searched through my house to find all my GFCI's and pushed all the test buttons and tripped them back over. None of this worked. I went to my storage unit and flipped my breakers and waited several minutes before turning them back on. This did not work. I went online to research and honestly felt my GFCI's inside needed replacing or worse, we were looking at a wiring issue. As I'm trying to sell my house and closing was scheduled for Monday July 2nd. And with a the buyer's inspector getting back with us last minute, I really needed to get with an electrician quickly. Home Adviser recommended Mr. Electric. I had no luck with calling other numbers presented, so I called. I was able to get an appointment the next day. I was told on the phone pricing was fair and reasonable depending on the issue. When the Electrician finally got there, he pulled the covers off, checked for power with his tool, he the neighbors outdoor outlets. He tested the wires and saw that...Yup,no juice. He checked the breaker box, and the 3 GFCIs inside (basically did everything I had already done, and told him I did, but I knew he would do this part of the job). He then politely tells me that it looks like he is going to have to replace the GFCI's. He explained that they had a flat $301 diagnostic fee that covers replacing GFCI's, includes a "complimentary" inspection (note quotations for later), and parts he had available in van for replacing GFCIs and wire. since we both felt this was the issue I signed, after all we both looked around for GFCIs. I signed the paper thinking this is fair with him having to replace parts and such. The technician took the outlet completely out of the siding and look at the wires, I heard him say, "there has to be another one." he stood up asked me about inside again and walked into the storage unit. he looked around the water heater and then I heard him exclaim when he saw. it was close to the concrete floor, he missed it, I missed, others had missed it in the past. There was the "other" GFCI that operated the outdoor outlets, and it was tripped! He pushed the the button, got up tested the outlet and it was working, tested the front outdoor outlet it was working. he put the covers back on and that was that. I asked if I still had to pay the $301, and he explained unfortunately yes, that it was their flat fee and company policy. I paid thinking that was very odd and steep. I called the company and asked about and was told that yes, it was their fee (Other companies charge what is known as a tripping fee for something like that one electrical company says they only charge $40), the woman took my name and number and left it for the manager to get back with me. all that was Thursday, June 28. I never received a call back. I called the office again Friday, June 29 and again left my name and number, this time I received a call that afternoon. The manager acted civil and polite enough as he spoke down to me over the phone, explaining how he spoke with technician and how he had checked all the outlets and wires and made sure the house was safe and working properly (I suppose that was the "complimentary" inspection? he didn't check all the outlets inside...and not so complimentary is it) therefore he felt the $301 was justified even if all he did was push a GFCI button. He then said he could understand how I felt and would do is give me a $50 credit on my account with them for when I use their services in the future.. I felt like there was no way i was winning this with this man. if I said, no that was not satisfactory, like I would be given any type of retribution. No, Mr. Electric. Keep your credit. I'll just spread the word about your flat diagnostic fee. Even if it's a simple solution. I will also report to the better business bureau and I already reported on Home Advisor. I'm sure, no, I know other companies have smaller standard fees to cover things as simple as tripping a GFCI. I don't want your $50 credit to my account, I will never call you again. You could have done better in this situation and done better to prove you want repeat business, when my neighbor heard the amount charged and for what, she said she would not be calling. your fee speaks for itself, and she was there.
