Bottom line up front: Scammed me out of 3800 dollars. One star and multiple complaints on Better Business Bureau (BBB), not accredited on BBB, not current with FL dbpr. STAY AWAY! Owen Mixon, the sole owner/employee of Coral Heating and Air, was referred to me by a family member who was connected to his family. My two AC units died this past January and Owen came out to assess the problem. I am currently a full-time student with a wife and dependent newborn so, needless to say, I am on a tight budget. On the strength of the strong recommendation and the positive impression he made on me, we came to terms and I wrote him a check for 3800 (half the install price) which he cashed that same day under the pretense of purchasing the new AC units. Due to the presence of the newborn, I was keen on getting the issue resolved as quickly as possible (two days after the initial appointment). Owen promised to do so. After repeated delays and several days beyond the agreed install date, Owen came by to remove my old units and promised to finally install the new ones the next day with an understanding that, should he fail to show up, he would refund me my money so I could have another company complete the job ASAP. Owen failed to show up the next day and there was a cold spell in the area. My old units still had heating capacity (resistance heating), but he had removed those, effectively endangering the health of my newborn daughter. Owen has a pathological penchant for making excuses which ranged from a problem with his work vehicle (which is in a relative’s name rather than his own) to losing his phone, to another job running late. With apologies and assurances from Owen that he would get me my money ASAP, I had a reputable company (First Coast Climate) finally come out and complete the install within two days. This other company was highly professional and required no cash advance. They did the quote one day, and the complete install the next day. After repeated excuses and promises to pay me after he received money from some (actual or imagined) next job, Owen finally stopped returning my text messages in late February. In short, he effectively scammed me out of 3800 dollars. I considered legal action against him, but was advised that Owen was likely “judgement proof” (previous bankruptcies, a lack of assets in his name, lapsed licensure with Florida dbpr, etc.). My only recourse, then, is to write this honest negative review (plus Florida dbpr/BBB complaints) to at least try to prevent the next sucker from getting scammed. In hindsight, there were a number of red flags that I ignored at the time: Owen’s repeated mentions of being short on cash and over eagerness to cash the check the same day I gave it to him, his attempt to upsell me and obtain and additional 700 dollar check from me, and his unresponsiveness and imaginative excuse/story telling as the job was continually delayed. Some other red flags I found out too late, due to stupidly trusting the family referral and not doing sufficient research: multiple BBB complaints against Owen for similar issues/scams, similar complaints against Owen on online review sites, lapsing of his Florida dbpr license since 8/31/2018. In short, hide your money and stay away from Owen Mixon.

On March 10, 2019, Thomas Owen Mixon of 1426 Baden Powell Road, Hawthorne, FL received $4,000 from me to purchase materials for an AC installation job which was to commence that week. As of March 25, there are neither materials nor workers on site. Grand theft charges are to be filed shortly.
