This single family residence is published in the February 2014 issue of Dwell Magazine. It was the first SIP building to use pressed wheat and rice straw in California. An alternative materials and methods building permit application was required to get this built. It also uses wood that was harvested and milled on site.

This project was done as a detached art studio for a residential client. The idea was to use industrial parts and materials in a simple and elegant domestic setting that would be utilitarian, affordable and supportive of the more involved residence.

The project was a major renovation. The building was settling and needed to be leveled. In the process several upgrades to the residence were simultaneously undertaken. We replaced the windows, reroofed, and insulated the residence. The porch was settling and therefore most of the porch is new. The interior plan was opened up and the flat ceiling space at the front of the residence was vaulted to increase the perceived size of this relatively small residence.

This project was a remodel of an existing residence along with a new pool and an outdoor kitchen. With beautiful south facing views, the residence employed cable mounted exterior shades that eliminate over 95% of the light while permitting one a shaded view.
