The EPA's action level is 4.0 picocuries per liter which is a measure of radioactivity in the air. High levels of radon don't just stay in the basement; they can travel to the main floor or higher levels in a home or building. Radon is drawn into a structure by air pressures and currents. Mitigation systems work by lowering the air pressure slightly under the foundation of a structure. The system draws the Radon away before it gets into the house and blows it out above the roof. Radon gas carries radioactive particles that can get trapped in the lungs as a person breathes. Radon leaves radioactive particles that release small bursts of energy that can damage lung tissue and lead to lung cancer over time.
