Back in November 2016, my wife and I decided to have a covered porch added to our small pier and beam bungalow in the Heights. We went to porch.com and solicited bids from 3 contractors, one of which was Tomlin Total Home whom we selected to do the work for $6000. We gave the owner (Jameson Tomlin) the 1st $3000 to buy materials and start the job. The morning after he hung the ledger, erected the frame and laid the decking, I went out and measured the deck to check square. I noted the requested 12’ x 12’ footprint was over 5” out of square. When I pointed this out to the contractor, he complained that there had been a buried telephone line that forced him to move footing. He assured me that this would not present a problem as he went along. I reiterated the points that I wanted him to: 1.) move the water bib (that would end up under the new porch) to the side of the house, 2.) ensure that the water from the house roof and the new porch roof be diverted from the main electrical panel (by rehanging the gutter sections), and 3.) ensure that the screened in sections from the knee wall up to the ceiling were well anchored and well-sealed so that there would be no mosquito (or other flying insect pest) penetration interfering with our use and enjoyment of this new porch We paid him the 2nd $3000 before Christmas so he could pay his crew. The screens were drooping and sagging. Mr. Tomlin promised to bring a specialist (“a screening guy”) to fix the problem after the first of the year and would pay this specialist out of his (Mr. Tomlin’s) “own pocket. The screens sagged and had gaping holes through which one could easily pass an arm. All of the posts and hand rails were leaning or out of alignment. When it rained, the badly rehung gutters poured water all over the electrical panel. It cost us a little under $500 to get the gutters redone Our January water bill tripled from what it normally was and the plumber we called in noted there were two leaks and several violations (i.e. using black pipe – which is restricted to use for gas lines only – instead of code acceptable galvanized or copper). Fixing the piping damaged and the water bib cost us another $2700. Mr. Tomlin three times agreed to come over and discuss fixing the screening issue. He never showed. Fixing the screening and the framing supporting it cost another $1500. It is my opinion that Mr. Tomlin should stick to mowing lawns and even then, under close supervision by an adult.
