4D Architects was founded by Seattle architect Barbara Pickens and Eastside designer Ben Mulder in 1985. With over a quarter century in business, the firm has been consistently recognized-locally, regionally, and nationally-for exceptional creativity and commitment to quality design. Despite their continued success, Ben and Barbara have chosen to keep their firm small, allowing them to remain personally involved with each client and project. At 4D Architects, we translate your dreams and desires into the highest quality design. Powered by exceptional creativity, we marry together the elements of space, form, light, color, and texture creating homes and buildings designed to serve your needs for years to come. Our projects include beautiful and comfortable homes, distinctive multi-family dwellings, high-performance office buildings, innovative land use designs that respond to the surrounding environments, as well as creative and effective solutions for existing structures. Our designs reflect the ecosystems and culture of the Pacific Northwest, and we embrace the challenges and opportunities offered by the difficult sites found here. We are committed to Built Green practices that protect the environment, and we are experts in land use and working in environmentally critical areas (ECAs). Each home or building we design takes into account all of the unique features and encumbrances of its site. You can be sure that a home designed by 4D will be the only one like it: beautiful, functional and unique.

Kirkland Contemporary View Home | Feb 2013 | This single family residence was designed for a couple wishing to downsize without sacrificing the features found in larger homes. The slope of the street and existing site topography allowed for the placement of the garage below the house, elevating the main level to take maximum advantage of the site's solar access and panoramic views of Lake Washington. In the home's living areas, corner windows capitalize on the views, while large overhangs on the South and West sides of the house shield much of the summer sun, yet allow winter sun deep access into the home. 3-inch, radiant-heated, exposed concrete floors provide thermal mass throughout the main level to store heat on sunny winter days and minimize temperature swings. The entire upper floor of the home is dedicated to the master suite and study, with generous walk-in closets and built-in cabinetry. The basement level offers sufficient space for a future bedroom and bathroom. A signature stair connects the three levels of the home, emphasizing the contemporary design and open feel of the space. The exterior of the home responds to its urban setting with flat roofs, subtle curves and large outdoor balconies for entertaining guests. | Kirkland, WA | ||
Clyde Hill Modernization | Oct 2011 | The main goal of this Clyde Hill remodel was to update both the interior and exterior of the home, while increasing the livable area. On the main floor, we enlarged the entry and reconfigured the staircase to provide a more open foyer and completely renovated the kitchen with a new layout, modern finishes and appliances. Upstairs, we added a new bedroom with an en-suite -bath and added a full bath to an existing bedroom. We also created a multi-purpose room over the existing living room that is accessed via a balcony overlooking the enlarged foyer. We modernized the entrance to the home and updated the exterior siding to create a more contemporary outdoor appearance. | Clyde Hill, WA |
