What to say about Sun American Builders? During our renovation (a complete kitchen, a complete bathroom, new shoe moldings and paint throughout, and a ceiling fan) we had a lot of issues. Constantly late workers, no shows, inexperienced workers, damage caused by workers, and so much more. The person dealing with the kitchen cabinets even waited until the day before the install, an entire month after the design approval and order, to let us know what we wanted and agreed upon wasn’t available that way from their vendor. By and large I dealt with these issues as the project supervisor, who no longer works for them, was very good at listening and de-escalating. There was also enough compensation made near the end of the job for me to take everything and walk away somewhat content enough to just deal with it even though I was not 100% satisfied. But then we come to everything that happened afterwards. I had to have them come back THREE times to replace cracked glass tiles in the shower. The entire time I kept asking about a crack suppression membrane, which they did not install, but all research and other tile specialists say they should be used with glass tiles in bathrooms because of heat expansion/contraction. Anytime I mentioned it they shrugged it off. It took a formal letter to finally get a phone call, because they weren’t returning my calls, from one of the owners to get someone to my place to replace the tiles that 3rd time because it was after the job was completed (also the guy used the wrong color grout resulting in discolored areas during that 3rd visit.) Since then, I have found a major defect in a cabinet door in the kitchen that needs replacing. I paid top dollar for high gloss thermafoil cabinets. We had a lot of instances of bad quality-controlled pieces needing to be replaced during the construction, which was always a fight with their extremely rude and combative cabinet “expert”. “God does not make things perfect.” and “You aren’t spending $1 million on this job.” are HIGHLY unacceptable things to say to a client. I also had a small piece of our new quartz counter tops randomly fall out. And my shower tiles are now cracking for a FOURTH time. I once again contacted Sun American to get these 3 issues resolved. It took some time, but they finally reached out via text and came to look at the issues. The problems were acknowledged and I was told they would get back to me about dealing with them. A week later they set up an appointment for a counter guy to come look and see what could be done. On the day of the appointment no one showed up. And no one would answer my texts or calls. I spent the next 3 days calling and being told I would receive return calls. Never once did I receive any apologies for the no show. And in a message passed down through the office manager they tried to tell me neither the tile nor the counter was a warranty issue. Except for the fact the failures are due to poor quality/bad workmanship which very much defines them as a warranty issue. I was finally told I would receive a call back from one of the CEO’s in an hour…nope. And when I called again the office manager said she would get him on the phone and call. Never happened. All of this has been documented in a certified letter they have received. At this time they have chosen to ignore me and hope this goes away rather than back the poor quality of their work and materials. Aside from leaving this review to warn others from dealing with this company and their unprofessionalism, I am also filing a complaint with the state contractor licensing board. It hasn’t been a year since completion and issues such as these should NOT be happening. Customers Beware. DO NOT HIRE Sun American Builders.
