Bathroom Remodel

Jan 2014

The Dressler's spend a large majority of the week caring for you their two great-grand-children. Neither of the brothers are in school yet and as young boys often do, they are always finding ways to get dirty. Unfortunately, when it came to tubby time, the Dressler's miniature cast iron tub was far from adequate - too small and too pink! Their need for a larger tub lead the Dressler's to decide it was time to update their entire bathroom. Their existing bathtub was a unique 48"x48" cast iron tub with only a 12" deep triangular basin. There just wasn't enough room for the grandchildren to take their baths! We were able to help! By utilizing the depth of a closet from the adjacent room, we were able to relocate their linen shelves to make way for a larger tub. The Dressler's also took advantage of a more accessible, taller vanity and toilet option. The Dressler's loved the look of the solid surface - low maintenance vanity top and Cape-Cod wainscoting which was used to eliminate the blue mud-set tile covering the bathroom walls. The kids are thrilled about their new tub!

Remodel for Handicap Accessibility

Jan 2013

Shirley and Frank live with their daughter and son-in-law, Melissa and Sam. Shirley and Frank both have health concerns that may eventually require wheelchair accessibility for their first floor bathroom, a small 5'x7' space. Their remodel involved removing a window within the shower area that was in poor condition due to the wood casing and windowsill being damaged by moisture. We also added a fan/light combination exhaust fan to help with moisture control and lighting. To help with future accessibility needs we changed the vanity depth from 21" to 18." With future accessibility in mind we also increased the doorway from a 28" opening to a 36" opening. This required us to move the light switch into the hallway which will also allow for easier access while in a wheelchair. We replaced their cast iron tub with a shower base for ease of access. Moisture-resistant drywall was installed to provide maximum moisture protection. Masonry on the home's existing brick exterior was completed by matching the existing brick as closely as possible. We removed an unnecessary half-wall that was between the existing vanity and toilet to open up the space for future accessibility needs. In the shower we installed a three grab bars for safety purposes. We also installed a hand-held shower to help with bathing should either of the family become wheelchair bound in the future. The finished project is a beautiful, functional bathroom that will meet any of Frank and Shirley's future accessibility needs, without sacrificing style for function.
