I requested Jump To It Plumbing come out to detect a leak and give me an estimate for the repairs. Derrick, from Jump to it came out at the agreed upon time. After about 8 minutes, he determined the leak was in the main water line and it would cost about $2400 to repair it. Let go back for a moment. When Derrick arrived, I explained that earlier this summer, I had a lawn put in and an irrigation system installed. Immediately after the lawn and irrigation was in, my water bill was 4 times my normal amount. I continued to explain that an earlier guy had come out and determined it was a defective backflow preventer and shut it off at the valve. The previous guy dug a little by the main line to see if there was any reason to be concerned that it was the main line and since there was no wet ground, he didn’t think it was the main line. Then he checked the water meter and told me it did not look like the leak was in the main line because there is no water running in the house and the meter was not spinning. This information and the fact that Derick didn’t consider any of this, only went to the street and looked at the water meter was the only reason I even questioned Derrick’s diagnosis. I would have normally just scheduled the work and been done with it. After Derrick told me it was the main water line and it would cost $2400 to fix it, I explained that was just not in my budget, but he insisted this was the only thing to do and I needed to have it fixed now before more damage was caused. After a few minutes talking about all the horrible things that can happen if I didn't fix it immediately, Derrick acted completely caught off guard when I requested a written estimate so my boyfriend (who works in construction and is more familiar with issues like this) could look at it. Derrick stuttered a little but then when to his truck to write the estimate. 5 or 10 minutes later, Derrick reappeared and assured me the estimate was emailed to me. As soon as he left, I went to my email to print the estimate out, but the estimate had no amounts included. I am not normally suspicious of people, even when I probably should be, and I am far from paranoid but I honestly feel like this guy was a con artist who would have allowed me pay such a high amount for something that didn’t need to be done in the first place. Before he looked at the meter, he asked me more than once if the water was turned off inside the house, and after answering the 3rd time I added, I am the only one here. I showed him the muddy ground which was nowhere even remotely close to the main water line and he insisted it was the main line even though the ground was not wet at all in the yard by the water main nor anywhere around it. I do not know a lot about plumbing or water pipes but in trying to find the leak the water company gives you several methods for narrowing it down to where the leak is and if I could do it, then Derrick should have definitely been able to verify whether the leak was truly in the mainline or elsewhere. I say it again, I was able to follow the direction on the water company's website and ultimate find and solve the leak problem, myself. It was the backflow preventer, the pipe going to the unit had a leak in one of the joints. We resealed it and now my water bill is back to normal. And I did not have to dig up my entire yard and pay $2400 to have the main water line repaired. Beware of this company and Derrick, I think they take advantage of people, especially women by falsely diagnosing expensive problems. There is no reason to think there was a leak in the mainline but more than enough evidence to look at the backflow preventer and you don’t need to be a plumber to figure that out.
