50 year time warp in a month

Dec 2014

This room, a month long project, was completely gutted in order to address the aging systems (electrical and plumbing), distressed floor, dated wall paper and rotted wood window. It is not uncommon for a home of this age that a wood sash window be present in the shower - major problem! This was eliminated by removing the window and installing a custom site-built, rot free, hopper window which was elevated in height to prevent possible future water damage to the substructure and ultimately gain adequate privacy. In order to pull this off without leaving behind signs of alteration, additional exterior siding (bat and board) work was required. From there, hammering out the detailed complexities of a full blown bathroom renovation was in full swing. In order to preserve the tile surfaces and more importantly the homeowner's investment; Schluter Systems - Kerdi and Ditra water proofing and uncoupling mat was installed. Unlike traditional concrete board or other antiquated systems, Schluter Systems was used to help protect the integrity of the tile and to eliminate the risk of future failure due to moisture and load. A quality porcelain tile accentuated by a glass and stone mosaic band was used in the room to gain a natural "earthy" color and feel. While similar in look to the more expensive natural stone tile such as travertine, porcelain can be used to mitigate the expense of stone. Abound with natural colors and modern charm, complemented by elegant finishes such as oil rubbed bronze fixtures and dark wood grain cabinets, this room evolved into a well-designed retreat for many years of use to come.
