Do old electrical panels need to be replaced? | Sep 2014 | Do old electrical panels need to be replaced? In a word, yes! The best analogy I've been able to give clients is that it's like driving a car without air bags. It may get you there but you are taking a risk. Here are several specifics: 1. Even though the breakers are just sitting there doing nothing, they are spring-loaded mechanical devices that eventually wear out. The problem is you don't know the breakers are faulty until they stick closed and cause heat, melting, and potentially fire. 2. Old panels don't have new safety features like a single main breaker, and arc-fault breakers (AFCI). 3. Often old panels are overloaded (too many circuits) OR they're undersized for modern demands (we use a lot more electricity now than people did in the past). 4. Frequently old panels have been the victim of homeowners and handymen who have made unsafe wiring modifications. | Parker, CO | ||
