When we hired Steve to tear out and put in a new deck for us I honestly felt we had found the right person! The deck was started in September and was supposed to be completed by Thanksgiving. He started the project with great enthusiasm that went downhill within a month. He wouldn't show up when he was supposed to, blamed the weather, blamed us (?). He wouldn't return our calls or text messages claiming he never received them (check your VM). The January following the Thanksgiving deadline he finally came over and we sat down & told him we wanted the deck done by Easter 2016. We wrote down the list of items that would need to be completed and he signed it. It was on & off again as to whether he'd show up. The deadline came & went (again) and after not responding to phone calls or texts I went over to his house. That's when more excuses began & blame placed on us. I reminded him of his signature and promise and he wasn't concerned. He finally finished it and the day he did we were both home and when he was done he drove away. Never came to the door so we could check over the completed (?) job and wouldn't respond again to calls or VM. He hired unreliable workers that he was trying to help out but had no experience. They performed shoddy work and threw their cigarette butts on our yard near the fence line. He was unsure on how to construct a portion of the deck rail. He said he was scared to try it so he just didn't show up (and never told us this). He did figure it out and it looked great when he was done. He told me over & over again that even when he's done he'll always be around if we need anything with the deck. He is not a man of his word so beware as tries to sell himself. There are boards on it that weren't mitered correctly and, after only 1 year, are coming away from the side of the deck. One of his crew thought by pounding more nails into that board it would help. We had him put siding on our utility barn also. Again, he left before we could check the job. When my husband checked it out after work he found that his crew member had not cut off any of the nails that had gone through on the inside of the door. This presented a dangerous situation. Steve did come by and cut the nails off but it shouldn't have happened if his employee had any sort of experience (or common sense). I should have followed my instincts when it took him over a month to get any of his previous clients to call me with a recommendation. I asked for 3 and received 1 call from a former customer. This man didn't really want to say good or bad things about Steve just that he did work for him. During the project I went onto another website and found a client he started to do a paint job for. Her problems were the same as ours - unreliable. She eventually needed to hire someone else to complete her job. One thing he was prompt about - cashing our checks! He apparently considered the deck completed in April 2016 when he drove away without a word. I have waited this long to post anything because I didn't want to over react but I feel the same now as I did in April 2016. Again, BEWARE!

Steve Hughes is a very professional and trustworthy individual and capable of most any type of construction , remodeling or handyman work. Highly recommended.
