Washington, DC Small Backyard Update

Apr 2014

Our client had a small backyard area that she wanted to maximize in order to host more outdoor gatherings. The client contacted us after seeing our work at a friend's home which included a water feature she liked. We designed a landscape for the client that incorperated a water feature that was appropriate for her small space and installed retaining walls in order to maximize her gathering space to allow for a new patio and the incorperation of new plantings and steppers up to her backdoor entry.

Clifton Retreat

Aug 2014

This residential client was interested in creating the perfect outdoor entertaining space for what they hope to be their 'forever home'. The in-ground pool structure already existed so PGI installed a new flagstone paver pool deck to enhance the current state of the pool area so it complimented the rest of the installation. Next, a three tier deck structure was installed from the upper-level back entrance of the house down to the pool deck. The top tier had a large seating/entertaining area; the second tier held an outdoor grilling station complete with granite counter tops and stainless storage and a dinning set. The bottom tier held another large seating platform. Because the property was sloped we installed many stacked-stone retaining walls throughout the property to enlarge the existing entertainment space near the pool. In order to incorporate many plant elements that could have been removed from the hardscaped areas, we installed planters behind all of the new wall structures. These plantings further enhance the beauty of these stone walls. To help define the space at the lower level, back entrance to the home located off the pool patio, we constructed a pergola structure on the pool deck at the entrance. Across the pool, a large, free standing, pool pavilion was constructed which housed a full outdoor kitchen equipped with a large bar, sink, dishwasher, grilling station, refrigeration, kegerator, and stainless steel storage on one end. On the other end of the pavilion was a large dining room and in-between the two was a full sized outdoor living room which included a fireplace with custom stone work, outdoor entertainment center, and state of the art sound system. The entire pavilion was outfitted with outdoor heating and fans to ensure outdoor controlled comfort year round. Around the backside of the pavilion, on the lower level, all additional space was maximized by installing fully enclosed, walk-in storage for the homeowner. The homeowner enjoyed the stack stone retaining walls installed around the pool area so much that we were commissioned to install the same stone veneering around the perimeter of their house and in some areas the stone veneering reached to the top of the home. Additional hardscaping for this property includes a techo-block driveway and stone walkway and steps to the front entrance of the home. This walkway also connected the driveway and the backyard retreat for another easy access point to the backyard retreat. PGI used Integral Lighting products for the outdoor landscape lighting. The majority of the 300 fixtures were installed in the pool/deck/pavilion and in the retaining wall areas. The final phase of this project included the design and construction of a Zen Garden which covers 1/5 of the entire property. The zen garden boasts water features, bridges, rock structures and statues, pathways, a coy pond, and contained bamboo plantings amid the additional landscape components and plantings. PGI now maintains the grounds of this property through year-round services provided by our Personal Gardening Services, a private, residential maintenance service for highly specialized clients.
