Landscaping Company - Mansfield, OH
A. C. Tuttle founded Tuttle Garden Store in 1932 during The Great Depression. It was located on 3rd Street at the 3rd Street Market. They carried all the same plant products that we do today. You could buy a 6 ft Flowering Crabapple for $1.25 and a Barberry for .25 cents! WOW! In 1935, A C Tuttle started to install landscaping and the name became Tuttle Landscape and Garden. One of the bigger jobs taken on in that period was a sod job at Camp Perry Firing Range in Port Clinton, Ohio. A.C. continued to install landscape full time until 1942. At which time he obtained a job with the superintendent Roger Au. He continued to landscape at this time on a smaller scale. Due to the war breaking out in 1941, business had become slow and labor hard to find since most men were away. As time went on and things got better, A Charles Tuttle decided to enter the family business. He was one of A.C. Tuttle's sons. As a young boy, he helped his father. In 1953, Charles purchased a dump truck for $500.00 with monies borrowed from the bank. He continued to install landscaping and pay on his loan. Mooorehead Motors came to town and awarded Charles Tuttle a wall to build at the corner of Ashland Rd and Central Ave. which still stands today. When Charles received his $500.00 for that job, he went straight to the bank and paid off his loan. The bank didn't want him to pay it off; they wanted to continue to make money on him! In 1960, A.C. Tuttle and Charles Tuttle as partners built a building at Betner & Lexington Ave where Key Bank is now. There they opened a garden store and landscape company. At that same time, they purchased a 60-acre field on St Rt 546 in Bellville to start a tree nursery. After months of clearing the land was ready to plant Flowering Crabs, Taxus, Evergreens and Maple Trees. For the next four years, A.C. Tuttle was in charge of the tree nursery while Charles ran the garden store and the landscape division. In 1964, A.C. Tuttle passed away and Charles took over the whole business. In 1968, Charles purchased our current location at 1295 S. Trimble Rd. He had a new building built opened in the spring of 1969 with a gravel parking lot. He had the greenhouses built in 1971 & 1972. As time went on, another Tuttle was interested in landscape and garden center field, Tod. At the age of 12, he started working here, loading customers, and helping around the lot. By 1978, Tod had received an associate's degree in Landscape Architecture from Michigan State. Tod was ready to join the operation full time. For the next 20-25 years, Charles and Tod continued to work together. In 2004, health reasons forced Charles to slow down and smell the flowers instead of planting them. Currently Tod runs the company with the help of his 2 sons, Trever and Travis.
