Alpharetta Cherry Wood Kitchen Remodel

Jun 2006

This Alpharetta kitchen was old, outdated and did not function for it's owners who love to cook and entertain! The homeowners knew they wanted custom cabinetry, cherry wood, rare granite, a pot filler, Viking cooktop, Subzero refrigerator with paneling, etc. AK stepped in with an outstanding design and introduced custom, quality materials and this rich cherry wood kitchen was created! Where an old kitchen desk used to be, an eye-catching combination of rich woods and striking stainless appliances combine to add a brand new cooking station to the kitchen. The upper cabinets around the dropped ceiling leave space for some desired accessories drawing the eye up to the unusual architectural features of the room. Exotic Brazilian granite is a centerpiece of the new kitchen. A neutral tumbled travertine stone in crema was used for the backsplash to continue the use of natural materials but also not to draw the focus away from the countertop. A custom desk was added that could also double as a buffet. The space was previously a butler's pantry with little obscured storage space. A faux cabinet front was created to fill the desk's knee space when the homeowners wanted to use the area for serving.

Elegant Kitchen Remodel and Home Addition

When the owners of this upscale suburban home first considered remodeling their home, the kitchen was their intended target. With a growing family, and a love for entertaining, the owners also realized what they really needed was more space. And from there the project grew beyond just the kitchen. Striking Omega Maple and Alder cabinetry work together in the kitchen to create great accents against the oak wood floor. The custom Omega hood draws the eye to this rear wall of cabinetry containing the Wolf gas cooktop. The furniture base on this bumped out area hides some additional support for the commercial grade cooktop but also adds to the custom look of the cabinetry. Spice pullouts, rollout drawers, and a pantry pullout give this relatively small wall of cabinetry the ultimate in function and storage. The dovetailed drawers with soft close full extension glides are just another unseen detail that illustrates the commitment to quality. The metered use of light rail, batten-scribe and fillers show the superiority of the design. Decorative end panels, cabinetry panels on the dishwasher, refrigerator and ice-maker show the extreme attention to detail that provided the owners with the seamless look they wanted! Structural support columns were added where the old house ended. To achieve the classic old world feel of the kitchen, the columns were encased in the same alder cabinetry that made the island. The flawless installation made the supports look like old wooden beams instead of cabinets – indeed superior craftsmanship. The raised bar facing the new living room was added for entertaining; whether serving food buffet style or as a place for guests to sit, stand and mingle the height of the bar would keep food and drinks at a comfortable height. Huge advancements in lighting were made throughout the space. Under and inner cabinet lights were added and set on a dimmer switch. Four pendant lights were added for additional lighting over the bar and to mark the transition from kitchen into other spaces. Eight recessed can lights were added to the kitchen and many more to the living room. The addition of seven new windows would add an immense amount of natural light to the room as well. An addition that did not look like an addition, but an original part of the home was the owner’s fondest wish. One that was able to be realized thanks to their contractor’s attention to detail, and superior commitment to quality. The grade of the addition was the first obstacle that had to be addressed. The backyard sloped slightly down from the home which meant special footings in conjunction with a measured new slab of varying depths had to be laid. Drainage was also addressed to ensure the new structure did not interfere with the existing drainage plan and to be sure that all water would quickly leave the new patio and areas surrounding the home. The slope, style and shape of the existing roof was duplicated when designing the new structure. Naturally, the shingles were an exact match to the existing roof. The siding on the rear of this 3-side brick home was completely replaced for a truly seamless look to the addition. An integral design detail that is easy to overlook is the deletion of a window on the second floor. Though the second floor was otherwise untouched, if it had been left as is the addition would have never looked like part of the original home as the owner’s wanted.
