Remodeled Kitchen

Dec 2011

This project consisted of remodeling a 1980's kitchen. The client's expressed desire was to create a space that would flow seamlessly into the adjacent living room to allow for easier entertainment and next to create a more contemporary and aesthetically pleasing kitchen. The layout of the existing U-shaped kitchen was changed into a single wall design with a large island. The island served to define the space without hindering access to or closing it off from activities occurring in the living room. The second need of the client (to create a more contemporary and aesthetically pleasing kitchen) was met by replacing appliances, flooring, all cabinets, and adding modern conveniences. Custom, maple with cherry finish, flat slab style cabinets were installed with large t-bar hardware that created the foundation of the sleek, modern look in the kitchen. To enhance the look, new stainless steel appliances were installed including a Kenmore counter top and coordinating hood manufacturer by Imperial that features clean lines and a stream lined appearance. Other modern day amenities include a warming drawer and a pot filler faucet installed in the backsplash above the counter top. The previous white tile, dark grout and floral patterned backsplash were replaced by matching 24 inch and 12 inch porcelain tile. Granite counter tops were installed that complimented the color scheme of the kitchen. LED lighting was installed in all of the fixtures in order to make the kitchen more energy efficient. This included under the cabinet lighting, pendent lighting and recessed lighting.

Remodeled Bathroom

Oct 2011

The clients of this project owned a cottage style 1930'2 house. The house had small bathrooms and closets and the space the clients wanted to remodel consisted of a 96 sqft bedroom and attached 31.5 sqft bathroom. In order to preserve the historic look of the house, molding and baseboards were used that were similar to the originals. Two original doors were removed during the remodeling process and reused as the pocket door in the toilet room and the entry door in the bathroom. Due to the house being over 70 years old, there was no insulation. The lath and plaster walls were demolished to allow insulation in the existing walls. The current three-quarter bathroom was replaced by a larger shower and toilet room and a double vanity was installed next to the shower. A walk-in-closet was created by simply framing a single wall parallel to one side of the room thus keeping material and labor costs down. The shower has a bench and duel shower heads. Porcelain tile was used on the shower with a complementing 1 inch by 1 inch glass tile accent. A custom frame less shower door gives an unobstructed view into the shower, showcasing the glass tile accent and duel climate control shower heads. The major challenges of this job were keeping the overall budget under $15,000 and keeping the new construction consistent with the look of the historical house.

Farmhouse Kitchen

Oct 2009

The existing was too small for two sisters cooking in the same kitchen at the same time. The desire was to use the space between the existing walls and install new cabinetry, sinks and island. Using the existing refrigerator and range was a priority. This project consisted of remodeling an existing kitchen and dining nook into one larger kitchen space. With two cooks using the same space at the same time, two sinks were needed as well as two cooking areas. To meet this need, a drawer type microwave was installed in the island along with small Jenn-Air Cooktop. The existing range was reinstalled along with a new custom built range hood to complete the cooking equipment. The cabinetry was custom designed and built for the space and distressed to look older, to achieve the look desired by the clients. Special features like an appliance garage and pull-out spice drawer was added to the usefulness of this unique kitchen. The under-cabinet, low-voltage lighting enhanced the glass tile backsplash, which accentuates the Corian counter top.

Frozen Yogurt Store

Jun 2009

This project consisted of a tenant Improvement to convert an existing, empty Storefront into a new Frozen Yogurt Store. This was a design-build project from the beginning. Our task was to take the rough ideas and thoughts of the client and prepare a complete set of commercial construction drawings. Meeting the demands of space and the occupancy loads needed by the client, while keeping the city building department satisfied was quite the challenge from a planning perspective. The client wanted to use Frozen Yogurt machines that were meant to stand alone in space, instead of setting through walls. The requirement was to design a wall that would accommodate such a machine look as if it were designed to be placed in a wall. Several old architectural components were used, namely an old support post and the original concrete floor. Both were cleaned, stained and finished to add to the electric feel when viewed with the large mural art piece.

Community Theater Renovation

Jan 2008

A community theater, presenting live theater productions, was housed in an old retail space in the downtown area. The original building was built before the 20's. It had housed several businesses throughout its life, including offices and retail. We were able to come in and offer budgeting and practical scope of work advice. In order for such an old building to hold the weight of people and new seating, a new support structure needed to be built under the floor, which was accessed through the basement. The existing seats were plastic, placed on deep risers with a relatively shallow rise. The arrangement, while necessary during the beginning, was not conducive to the theater experience. The risers needed to be demolished, and a new support structure was built for 'new' refurbished theater seating, placed in an arena-style platform with a steep ride. The stage floor required placing a new sub-floor down on top of an area that had at least three other layers of sub-floor placed over the years. Many of these layers did not match and had to be removed, matched and redone. This new arrangement dramatically helped transform not only the aesthetic look of the building, but the theater experience itself.

Kitchen Remodel

Jan 2006

This project consisted of updating and modernizing a 1973 kitchen. The existing kitchen was cut off from the family room and had a harvest gold color scheme with dark wood cabinets. The layout of the kitchen was redesigned to create a more open feel and functional space. The existing 7 foot ceiling became a vaulted ceiling to give the kitchen a more open feel. The appliances were positioned in an efficient working triangle to provide a well-designed flow. Also, the wall that separated the family room from the kitchen was removed in order to allow cooks to socialize with friends and family. In place of the wall a large custom two tiered island was installed to define the space of the kitchen while at the same time preventing cooks from feeling isolated. The island is unique in that the cooktop vent is retractable. The fan assembly is under the floor which also allows the vent to be ultra quiet; another feature that is conducive to entertaining while in the kitchen. As a result this permitted the drawers under the cooktop to be full depth creating trouble-free storage for large pots and pans. Other custom features in this kitchen include a water filtration system with an instant hot water dispenser perfect for cooking and making hot drinks, an under counter ice maker with restaurant style ice, a warming drawer conveniently located beneath the oven, trash compactor, and pullout drawers in all of the under counter cabinets to make pantry items easily accessible. The kitchen features a counter depth refrigerator that fits in seamlessly with the cabinets, panel ready appliances, genuine hickory flooring and a tumbled natural stone backsplash that compliments the granite countertops. The cabinets feature low voltage under cabinet lighting and all lighting is controlled by smart dimmer switches allowing the owner to create personalized ambiance.
