We hired Rob Yancey’s company, Design Concepts Construction, to build a 16x18 family room addition. For over 4 months after starting the project, it was one long series of problems. It has failed every single inspection. Every step of the process was plagued by poor quality work, from a foundation laid with cracked block, to a roof that leaked even after it was “corrected”. The windows are not the size agreed upon, even after I brought it to their attention. Instead of getting the correct size (which would have needed to be ordered) they slapped in some slightly closer- still too small- ones then tried to charge an extra $800! The drywall tape is already peeling, trim is poorly installed and does not match the rest of our house as specified. This continued despite repeated calls and emails to Mr Yancey, who stopped responding altogether. He wouldn’t even talk to us on the rare occasion that he was on site! He kept deferring to one of his workers, who made excuses and contradictory statements, gave timelines that were not kept, and generally behaved in an unprofessional manner. This supposed “expert” helped himself to my kitchen and bathroom, rummaged around in our shed- using ladders, radios, etc. He made threats of physical harm against my family when questioned about poor work. The final straw came when they tried to “touch up” the horrible drywall, after paint and carpet were done, without ANY attempt to keep the immense cloud of dust from entering our living space through a 5 foot wide doorway. Not sure why the roll of plastic wasn’t used to cover, but I came home to a cloud of particulates. My 3 year old daughter was born with a compromised respiratory system so this could have had dire consequences for her health. I had to open all my windows, in December, and spend hours vacuuming to make her home safe enough for her to return. There are now charges pending with the Virginia Board of Contractors related to this debacle. What should have been a relatively easy upgrade for our family has instead been unnecessarily stressful, and time consuming. The quality of the work is so poor that it could very well lessen the value of our home and I'm embarrassed for guests to see it.
