Architect - New York, NY
Based in New York and Tokyo, the partnership of Yoshihara McKee Architects was established in 1996. Our goal is to create new ideas for living and spatial experience through innovative spaces. We explore new values and ideas that have been buried in the subconscious, and reject design principles that are based only on the demands of budget and function. We have designed a wide range of building types including; apartment renovations, private residences, condominiums, gymnasiums, offices, day care centers, clinics, theaters, and parks. Projects range in size and cost from economical residential renovations to proposals for large-scale urban interventions. In these projects we investigate innovative uses of underutilized materials and their potential as architectural components. Sandra McKee has gained invaluable experience working on projects in New York, Toronto and Tokyo. She is registered in New York and Nevada, and is involved in all phases of the work. She is an adjunct professor at Fordham and Columbia Universities, and a visiting critic at architectural and interior design schools including City University, and Pratt Institute. Hiroki Yoshihara has worked on a variety of projects in his native Tokyo and in New York. He is actively involved in all projects in the firm and heads up all projects in Japan, where he is registered as a First Class Architect. He obtained a Ph. D. in physics prior to his study of architecture. He is registered as a First Class Architect in Japan. "Our goal is to create new ideas for living through innovative spatial experience. Our work is visually engaging, reinforcing our underlying philosophy that good design is an indispensable part of everyday life and that the best way of encouraging the values of sustainability is to be responsible with the resources we are given: our environment, our time, and our money. To create our instructive and engaging environments, we approach every design by responding to the specific context, which results in inspiring and useful spaces that are modern in outlook. This approach is characterized by the use of natural light and simple materials, creating a relaxed atmosphere where emphasis is placed on the well-being of the individual. We combine our professional training and life experience in our work. We achieve creative designs with an awareness of the need for maintaining value for investment. Our work is grounded in the desire to create projects of excellence that will last for centuries." Town School Theatre | Sep 2013 | This existing theatre is the heart of a Manhattan private school accommodating student performances, assemblies and ceremonies, and functions daily as a classroom. The renovation was planned to invigorate the functions of the theatre and emphasize this space as the heart of the school. The result is a dramatic theatrical environment with its indispensable mystery and expectations as well as a bright and lively working classroom with its attendant technology. This was achieved through the addition of a minimal number of simple objects to transform the space, the use of colors to articulate the elements, and an upgrading of the theatrical systems. The new color palette drastically modifies the space. A scheme that is both dramatic and fresh was created from within the manufacturer's standard colors. This color palette continues to the entry providing an identity for the theater within the school. Concealed lighting and a wood canopy provide an introduction to the space beyond. The project was completed over the school's summer vacation, with its immovable fall deadline. Students returned to a transformed theater. This year the firm was asked to design another facility related to this theater for the school. The project received a 2008 AIANYS award. | New York, NY |
