I hired Boyce’s roofing and to remove all of my roof tiles and replace the paper underneath (lift and lay). I received 2 quotes and Boyce’s was significantly higher than that of the other company. I decided to go with Boyce’s roofing despite the high cost. I like supporting family businesses and they convinced me that their expertise and quality of work was worth the extra money. I told them right away that my one concern was that I was having a new stove installed in my kitchen with an en exhaust and the contractor was going to have to cut a hole in the roof for the vent. I asked Jim if he could climb up on the roof with me so I could show him exactly where the exhaust would come out. Jim responded that he was too old/overweight to climb on the roof but Jason would go up with me. Jason and I climbed on the roof from my balcony and we stood on a valley between 2 pitched roofs. I showed him exactly where the exhaust from the stove would be. I asked Jason if he had any concerns at all. He responded with “no problem, just make sure the vent is tall enough that no water can get in since a lot of water will be coming off of the two roofs onto the valley." I agreed to relay that to my installer and asked again if there might be any other issues to be concerned about. Jason said “no.” On the agreed upon date, my installer came at 9 am shortly after the workers from Boyce’s roofing showed up. The installer cut the hole in the roof where we agreed. Jim showed up at 11 am, went up on the roof and came down immediately to tell me that “you cannot put an exhaust in a valley.” I asked him why his son Jason said it would be fine. Well, he said, “sometimes you just can’t see things until the roof is open, but you definitely cannot ever put an exhaust in a valley.” He then told me it would be $1,500 to replace the roofing material in the valley. I explained again that not only did Jason tell us to do that, but we discussed initially that there was a previous roof leak in the valley so the lower part of the valley was already in the bid to be replaced and the hole was maybe 2 feet above the area where the roof leak was, so it couldn’t possibly cost $1,500 to replace a few more pieces of roofing material. Jim did not budge. He charged me the extra $1,500. The good news is that in conjunction with the lift and lay, I had 16 operable skylights replaced. Jim really wanted to do the job along with the lift and lay, but again, Boyce's bid was almost twice as high as the competing bid. I decided to hire a professional skylight company to replace the skylights. That was the best decision. The skylight guys were excellent. I am so glad I did not entrust Boyce’s Roofing with the work. After I paid Jim, I called him a week later to replace a few broken tiles, which he agreed to do when he left the job before the skylights were finished. He never returned my calls, nor did Jason ever call me to apologize for his $1500 mistake about the valley. Like father, like son.

I used Jim to tearoff my old roof and install a new roof. His price was fair. I purchased most of the materials myself. As with all contractors, be sure you consider extras and changes in the beginning or you will be at their $$ mercy. Jim's a salesman and won't be hammering nails. The subcontactors he used stayed on the job until it was done. They kept the site clean, paid attention to all the details, and finished in good time.

After submitting a request for an estimate, they did not call. I called they and had an appointment for an estimate. Two hours after the appointment, I call to see where they were and the employee told me he was in a different city. He reset the appointment for today. It is now an hour after the designated time and there has been no contact from him. Two appointments; both no show, no call! I do not recommend this business.
