Stair Reconstruction

Jul 2014

Client had a home owner built staircase leading up to a garage apartment. It had not been attached correctly and was suffering from weather. It needed to be reattached, have some treads replaced, and a rail added for security. We took the stair down, cut it to fit the application better, removed damaged treads and reassembled the stairs. Then we added a treated lumber and smooth cedar rail system to give it a more polished look. The siding under the stairs had been damaged when the original stairs were removed by the home owner, so, we added pieces to patch the damage. Most of the cost was in labor, with treated lumber treads, treated lumber rail spindles and cedar top and bottom caps making up the bulk of the materials cost.

Custom Fence for Historic District

Jun 2014

Client had an old hardware cloth fence that had been existing since the house was built in the 1920s. She wanted to upgrade and had something very specific in mind. Since she lives in a historic district, it needed to get approval from the historic preservation society. We filed her design and paperwork, with a scale drawing of the fence, and got approval. This fence is not an ordinary fence. The posts are 6x6 treated, over three feet in the ground. The panels are inset, with each being built board by board of heavy rough cedar. All trim, caps and base shelf are cedar as well. The top is lined with heavy duty lattice panels, giving it a slightly lighter effect, since a seven foot high fence can dominate a landscape. We removed the existing fence, which turned out to be a chore! Those old metal posts did not want to come out. Then we layed out the post positions, cut the holes 36 inches deep and set each post with 40 pounds of concrete. The inset panels were hand cut and installed using weather resistant, heavy duty deck screws. This fence may last as long as its predecessor, or close! Almost half of the cost was in the cedar material and large scale posts. There was also some cost associated with the design and approval process.

Hidden compartment built-in bookcase

Jun 2012

The client had an ugly built in shelf that was falling apart, so he removed it. When we came on scene, he had an ugly opening next to his fireplace, with a large area below it that he wanted to use for concealed storage. We built a case to fit the hole, complete with drawer guides for the bottom shelf, allowing him to stash his belongings where thieves were unlikely to find them.
