Custom Home: Osterville - Cape Cod

Feb 2015

This home, built on a rare vacant lot in the heart of Osterville Village, was completed late in 2014. A varied roofline and the use of multiple dormers along its front, give the home a classic, snug New England appearance, yet the living space is more than 3,000 square feet. A low natural stone retaining wall adds character and creates a level front lawn. A gas-burning streetlamp is a thoughtful touch which harkens to the days of old Cape Cod. Inside the wide front door is a two-story foyer. Its walls are lined with tongue-in-groove, white-painted woodwork and a staircase, custom-built on site, leads to the second floor. The open area at the top of the stairs offers a comfortable sitting area. Two bedrooms, one with an adjacent private office, share a full bath while a third, larger bedroom has en suite bath. The first floor has an open-floor plan living and dining area and a chefs kitchen with a large center island. A sitting area, with a cathedral ceiling and gas-burning fireplace, is tucked away to one side. Both the living area and first-floor master suite, which has a full bath and separate dressing room, have sliders opening to the private backyard. A butlers pantry and laundry room are also located on the first floor.

Home Renovation: Centerville, Cape Cod

Nov 2012

This is a classic Cape Cod beach house, one of several century-old, Shingle-style homes on quiet street running along Vineyard Sound. It was purchased by a family with young children who wanted to maintain its historic bones, but wanted to update the home and create something which was more casual and livable. In an extensive custom remodel, C.J. Riley Builder created multiple half-stairways which join the various living spaces. A varied roofline, with multiple dormers, keeps the home from appearing overly large both inside and out. A variety of custom-crafted mahogany elements cabinetry in the corridors, fishing tackle room, dining room, kitchen and bathroom, and ceiling detail throughout give the interior a yacht-like vibe. The kitchen has a retro feel with a pressed tin ceiling and a custom-made diner booth for quick family meals. An adjacent space used an office and kids crafting area features an arched ceiling finished with marble subway tile.

Custom-Built Home: Cape Cod Historic Neighborhood

Sep 2012

The owners of this custom-built home on Cape Cod wanted something modern and streamlined. With yellow clapboard siding and a varied roofline, the exterior is in keeping with the surrounding neighborhood which is filled with historic homes. Its interior offers a pared-down, minimalist, Zen feel with crisp white walls in much of the home, and sleek custom-made cabinetry and doors. Light-hued hardwoods were used on the entire first floor creating seamless transitions from room to room. Clutter-reducing features include a built-in bank of cabinets in the dining area as well as cabinets which were custom-designed to house specific items such as a water cooler and spices. In the master suite, a small alcove was fitted to create a home office. The second story includes two bedrooms, each with an en-suite bath.

Kitchen Remodel: Centerville, Cape Cod

Oct 2011

This custom remodel was a partial renovation project on fairly new home in a quiet Cape Cod neighborhood in Centerville. The kitchen had good bones, but the hardware choices felt dated and the layout wasnt conducive to entertaining. We replaced the countertops with striking black granite. We added a much larger counter to the center island which includes the cooktop that allowed seating to be added for family meals and created a natural gathering spot during dinner parties. The fixtures, cabinet pulls and flooring were all updated and tile backsplash in varied shades of silver was added. The changes were dramatic, but by leaving the existing cabinets in place, the construction time and costs were kept to a minimum. At the same time, we built a small addition to house a new laundry room with multiple washers and dryers and a wall of custom-built drawers and cabinetry.

Accessible Addition: Cape Cod

May 2011

We custom built an addition to an existing century-plus-old home in a historic waterfront neighborhood on Cape Cod. The addition includes two bedrooms and a bath, an open floorplan main living space with a living room, and a kitchen and dining area all of which have great views of the ocean. The space was to be used by a person with mobility issues, so there are no thresholds between the extra-wide doors or leading into the large, glass-enclosed shower. The kitchen is arranged along one wall to allow ease of use and certain elements such as the microwave were positioned in the lower level of cabinets so they were easily reachable. A custom-built fireplace surround incorporates natural beach pebble insets and the ceiling in the primary living space is finished with insets of pickled pine. We relocated the homes primary entrance to create a transition from the existing portion to the addition. Overall, the exterior of the addition is barely discernable from the existing home.

Custom Building: Osterville Waterfront

Apr 2010

This Osterville estate is one of our larger custom-built homes on Cape Cod. The home, which is situated on a large waterfront parcel with a private beach, includes four stories of living space. Its front door, flanked by classic columns on either side, opens into a dramatic two-story entrance with large windows on the far side framing the ocean view. The main staircase winds up through the turret which is visible on the exterior of the homes facade. An open walkway off the second-story hallway offers views into the foyer below and leads to a private master suite. The lowest level of the home offers a bowling alley, billiards and space for family movie nights. Extensive millwork, in the library, the stairways newel posts and balusters, arched doorways and kitchen cabinetry, was custom fabricated on site by C.J. Riley Builders expert craftsmen and is a prevalent feature throughout the house. We also constructed a secondary building on the property which combines a guest house with a custom-crafted spiral staircase, pool house and multi-car garage.
