Our experience was similar to what Carole experienced. We paid 50% upfront. We were then asked to pay for additional paint multiple times and only received one receipt. Each trip he took to purchase additional materials or to take lunch took anywhere from 2 to 3.5 hours. He stood doors improperly on the driveway causing damage when they fell over. He wanted the final payment before the job was done, and when I refused he tried to bargain his equipment for payment anyway. After all the delays, and given the damage done to the doors, there was no way to complete the job by the agreed upon deadline. We spent more time and money repairing most of the doors but we are going to have to replace one door completely. They were all brand new doors.

It was a remove and repair 2 fence posts...a small "gig labor" job I posted on CL. At first meeting, I didn't feel right about hiring Chuck. He was persistent and emailed me, then just popped up at my door with the offer of 2 free cedar posts. I, unfortunately said ok. He said he needed to go to home depot to get concrete, which is 10 minutes away. 1.5 hours later, he returned. The 2 Cedar posts became 1 cedar post. After looking closer at the job, he said he needed a Roto Hammer drill and he would go buy 1, and needed it anyway, but I needed to buy the bits. Like a jerk , I bought the bits for $25 on top of our agreed price. He left and returned with an old tool....which seemed as if he had it all long in his car. The job commenced....the tool was quickly deemed inadequate. He said that we needed to go to home Depot and rent a Jack Hammer, which we did...with a 4 hour time frame. Unfortunately, I rented the second largest. He worked on it...struggling a lot. I went out and said I that I hated to see him struggle...he was swearing and threw down the jack hammer and said I should have gotten the largest...I agreed and said, he should have pressed me. He said that he needed to think and I walked away. I came back and he said he was done for now with only 1 post (of 2) partially revealed in the hole. He said he would return the Jack Hammer. I said, no...I would do it. He said, "I do it all the time”. He then pressed me to pay for the entire job! I said that that was wrong. He pressed and pressed, (bullied) me until I paid him...Like a jerk!! I told myself that if I trust this man, he will BEHAVE IN A TRUSTWORTHY MANNER. I felt very nervous and a bit fearful, nonetheless. He left and my gut told me, I blew it and should have returned the tool myself. Home Depot was 10 minutes away...I called them...he hadn’t returned the tool...I called him....he said he was returning it and hung up on me! He had over 2.5 hours to return it...now 2.5 days and has never returned the Jack Hammer! Home depot is charging me $600 salvage fee for it. I have been gravely ripped off! I’m filing a police report for theft. A trustworthy, smart, professional man is presently doing the, (now, very expensive), job. Update! Chuck just dropped off the Jack Hammer….no case, no bits. He said it had been stolen from his car….and he found it and beat the S____ out of the guy. Sure Chuck! I said…all you needed to do was drive 10 minutes to return it to Home Deopot. This was the most expensive rental/mistake I have ever made! Still want to use Chuck?
