Industrial Chic Basement Remodel

Jul 2012

Located in the SW Vista Hills neighborhood of Portland, Oregon, this basement remodel by Mosaik Design and Remodeling, transformed 1700 square feet of unused space into a comfortable, industrial chic living space for a family of four. The homeowners, two busy doctors, needed extra space for their pre-teen children. The existing 1700 square foot daylight basement in the 1967 home was virtually unused and was a maze of hallways with low ceilings, oversized guest room that was rarely used and a cramped outdated bathroom. The best design for this lower level was a clever, multi-purpose approach that would satisfy each family members needs, personal style and interests. The new design included removing almost every wall. They added large steel beams, raised the ceilings, added new soundproof insulation, new 4 inch white oak hardwood flooring, installed all new windows and opened up the staircase. The under-house garage was divided and became a perfectly-sized guest bedroom on one side with a storage and workout area, complete with a plasma TV, on the other. Mosaik Design & Remodeling wanted to create a livable, well-functioning space for this family, but more importantly, to create a space that told a personal story about the people that live there. The design team collected memorabilia, artwork, old photos, and many other sentimental items to help tell their story. The homeowners love of sports is especially evident in the new space, particularly in the new ping pong room. A life-sized poster of former Portland Trailblazer, Clyde Drexler takes center stage in a reclaimed fir frame, along with the custom-framed kids artwork, signed by then-Mariner Ichiro Suzuki. Stadium lighting, locally produced sustainable furniture topped with reclaimed fir and pops of red against the blue-grey and white walls, give the space a fun, contemporary industrial vibe. Originally, the team had the idea to paint the walls Blazer Red, but after some sleepless nights, ultimately landed on the more soothing blue-grey, and everything fell into place.

Elegant Master Closet

May 2014

The original master closet in this 5,000 sq. ft Lake Oswego, OR home was only about 110 sq. ft in size, creating the need for (4) rolling wardrobes to compensate for the lack of storage. Not only was the closet system constructed of inexpensive materials, but was laid out poorly with no creative storage to be found. The florescent light fixtures and bright yellow wall paint skewed the clothing colors adding to the imminent need for an expansion. By borrowing space from the back half of the garage, we were able to add another 170 sq. ft to the closet, more than doubling its size. Luckily, the existing window in the garage now lets in soft natural lightperfect for selecting just the right colored clothing and accessories. The design goal was to create unique storage solutions in a glamorous setting. Since both of our clients travel frequently, it was important to address these primary needs. The his & hers islands at just the right height for packing, valets to help select clothing and (2) areas for seating add comfort while packing or unpacking. A tip- out cabinet under the bench holds dry cleaning and custom dowels similar to these help to organize ties and handbags. The shoe shelves were custom designed specifically for his (yes his!) large shoe collection and the velvet-lined drawers in her island hold an envious collection of sunglasses. An built-in ironing board and toiletry organizers are also all are hidden behind the soft white traditional cabinetry. Locally crafted custom wood shelving and cabinetry dressed up with crystal knobs, now keeps their wardrobe beautifully organized. Mirrored doors reflect the light and double as full length mirrors to make the new closet fell even more expansive. The (2) stunning crystal chandeliers offer glamour at its best-- casting incredible light patterns into the light grey ceiling and adding the ultimate in sophistication in the space.
