Timberframe Farmhouse Kitchen

Feb 2013

We started with a kitchen, plagued with a lack of space and in desperate need of new appliances and cabinetry. The homeowners were not interested in gutting the kitchen because they really liked certain aspects of the existing kitchen. So we were able to work with their desire to keep what they liked and replace and build new where they wanted change. We began by modifying the pantry cabinets to accommodate a pull out trash can system, solid pantry doors and new drawers. We then moved to creating a larger opening for the new refrigerator. The kitchen already had two built-in bookshelves that displayed cookbooks, canisters, small appliances and decorative trinkets. We gave them a fresh look with two new doors at the bottom and new backs behind the shelves. The homeowners decided to purchase a new range that was much larger than the original. So we modified the cabinetry to make room for it. They chose to change the counter tops from an acrylic surface to granite. In the process, they decided to change the old cast iron sink to a new hand hammered copper farmhouse sink. This required the cabinetry to be completely overhauled and we rebuilt a new base cabinet for the sink. The problem of the lack of storage was solved by building and installing two additional sections of cabinetry. One being a hutch on the end wall of the kitchen, and the other being a set of narrow upper and lower cabinets in a nook which previously housed a deacons bench. For a kitchen island in the previous setting, the homeowners were using a small table simply for counter top space. We were able to build them a very attractive, yet functional small island where they now store their cooking utensils, pots and pans and cookie sheets. The last thing we did was to change out all the existing drawers which were old and very well worn with new dovetailed soft-close drawers. The final touches included adding a crown mold and light rail to the upper cabinets of the existing kitchen. This brought everything together and fulfilled their need for both form and function.
