Custom Fire Resistant Fence

Apr 2014

This is an installation of our unique fence design using metal posts and cement board siding planks with a lattice top of vinyl. It was custom designed by us to resemble the previous wood, falling over and termite riddled fence we removed. Since the property is on the edge of a fire prone canyon, the owner specified the fence be built out of fire resistant materials. Another benefit of this type of fence is that the termites and fungi won't touch it. The metal posts mean the fence can withstand 70 MPH winds.

Retaining walls and terracing back yard

Apr 2023

Slope bordering canyon was unusable and access leading down hill from either side of the house was terrible and even dangerous. We created two level areas for grass dog run and paver patio by building retaining walls out of Keystone block. We put a new fence around the area, so the owners' small dogs won't get out and put in wide steps to access the area from front of house. We also built a shed under the house.

Thoroughly modern rehab

Jan 2023

Coordinating with a general contractor, we designed and installed this modern looking landscape around an old South Balboa Park area mission style cottage, rental house and new accessory dwelling unit conversion from garage. White stucco walls define the space and there is a masonry couch in the dining area. Decomposed granite and coral tile patio brighen the courtyard, Succulents, cactus and subtropical foliage plants soften the edges. The driveway paving is an open grid concrete paver with the grid spaces filled with white gravel to create a permeable surface.

Lawn to Garden

Jun 2021

Taking advantage of the Southern California Water Rebate program the owner hired us to remove the old, dying lawn, design and install a colorful water conserving garden, using drought tolerant and native plants, rocks and a water catchment "dry stream". We re-used bricks from an old wall to create a new path from the street to the driveway.

Front yard makeover

May 2012

The owner loves plants and wanted more space to garden. We removed the front lawn and tilled compost into the soil. Costs included labor and material for soil preparation, building the brick path and low brick planter wall and to convert the existing spray sprinklers to a drip system. We collaborated with Linda Whitney of Garden Retreat Design, who did the design.
