Redmond Bathroom

Sep 2011

Original 1985 bathroom. Project location: Redmond Washington. General Contractor: Riddle Construction & Design. Designer: Chris Riddle, Certified Master Kitchen & Bath Designer. Area affected: 47 sq. ft. Overview Drab and dated, it was time to remodel this original 1985 hall bathroom. The homeowners wanted a unique space that was more distinctive than an everyday bathroom since it would also serve as the powder room for guests. Yet it had to be indestructible enough for their two teenage boys and offer plenty of storage. With a preference for contemporary materials, the new bathroom must also be easy to clean and maintain. Design Process The biggest challenge was making something distinctive out of a very small space. All the fixtures had to remain in the same location so any interest would have to come from the design and materials. Plus everything had to be durable and reasonably priced. The first element chosen was the cast iron bathtub for its tough finish which will stand up over time. This particular style allowed for tile on the side creating a more upscale look. Next porcelain tile was selected for its durability and strength. The same 18 x18 size was used throughout to maintain consistency and visually enlarge the space. Tile on the wall behind the toilet also makes for easy cleaning. A glass mosaic band was added to the tub surround as an interesting focal point. The cabinet style was repeated from other remodels Riddle Construction & Design had previously done in the house. A mid-height tall storage cabinet with a wall-hung vanity was incorporated instead of an ordinary vanity cabinet. This allows for plenty of storage space, plus also hides appliances such as electric toothbrush, blowdryer, etc. Holding the tall cabinet down and installing mirror over the top keeps it from becoming too imposing in the small space. The wall hung vanity presents a more contemporary feel while creating an area for inexpensive accent lighting. Slab granite not only compliments the color scheme, but also serves as structural support for the vanity. Sconces and faucets were chosen for their contemporary feel. In floor electric was added for its comfort. Designer Chris Riddle selected the majority of the materials with the exception of the faucet, sink and cabinet pulls selected by the home owner. MATERIALS Cabinets: Hertco Kitchens Countertop: 3cmm Giallo Santa Cecilia Tiles: United Tile Sink, toilet and tub: Kohler Faucet: Grohe Lights: Lighting Universe Finance Project cost: $23,500. Outcome Overall this project went quite smoothly and you can follow the entire process on Facebook. The homeowners, extremely pleased with the outcome, have this to say: "We have used Riddle Construction & Design for four projects now, and will keep going back to them until our whole house is remodeled! The first project was the largest and included our kitchen and master bath. My husband and I had different tastes, but Chris listened to us and proposed designs that we never would have thought of and worked beautifully. The quality of the work has been outstanding. Curt's craftsmanship and attention to detail has been key to the success of all the projects. We never had to wonder about what was coming next or when things were happening because Chris is a great project manager and communicator. We will continue to use them for our home projects and will happily recommend them to anyone."

Award-Winning Kirkland Contemporary Bath

Jan 2011

The dramatic bronze vessel sink by Stone Forrest served as the inspiration for this bathroom remodel. Staying within the original footprint of the room, materials were chosen based on the sinks organic feel. The simple cherry vanity features an onyx countertop that is lit from below, highlighting the natural features inherent in the stone. An irregular onyx backsplash follows the stones natural veining to imitate a mountain ridge. Porcelain tile resembling tree bark and natural pebbles wrap the inside of the spacious shower enclosure with corner seat. Asian-inspired hardware and Cifial faucets add to the ambiance of the space.
