E. Hillcrest Avenue Alterations | Jan 2008 | Inhabited by its original designer/owner since the 60s, this residence was in desperate need of upgrading. Its location in an established neighborhood enticed the new purchasers, who recognized its true potential. Although surrounded by a well-maintained garden filled with specimen plantings, the home's interior was very dated and uninteresting, with dark trim throughout. Ceilings were either too high or too low, and the layout plan was unsympathetic to today's lifestyle. To that end, the master bedroom wing was completely gutted and re-designed, to include a master suite, an office, laundry, guest room and a guest bath. A long, skillfully-lit hallway now runs the entire length of this wing, and provides wall and niche spaces for the owners to display and admire their art. The floor plan of the rest of the house remained pretty much intact, but extensive work was undertaken to improve its features. Ceilings were removed, raised or lowered and coffered, and then subtly lit. The existing parquet floor was retained and masterfully restored by a local Italian finisher. In the large living room, a temperature-controlled wine room was created, whilst a superb new kitchen was designed and custom made. Finally, to flood the house with as much natural light as possible, all the existing dark trim was removed and new full-length windows were installed. A neutral palette of limestone, colored plaster, and stained maple wood cabinetry brings a sense of calm to the new interior spaces. In the entry hall, a stunning copper wall fountain flows to the outdoor courtyard area. An old existing Japanese Maple tree was spared, but the courtyard paving and fencing were replaced. Although not shown on this page, the exterior garden was also redesigned. A large pool, fed by limestone wall fountains was created, and limestone-clad columns now delineate various outdoor seating areas. In the summer heat, these columns are hung with muslin drapes and, together with the neutral planting scheme, create a spa-like feel. An air of serenity now pervades this special home. Excellent quality of workmanship by the contractor is evident in all the details, ensuring that the potential recognized by the new owners was completely valid. credit: mark rusconi architects | $300k | Yuba City, CA

Sandburg Drive New Home | Jan 2000 | This 2000 square foot home was designed for an empty lot in River Park, east Sacramento. It was a rarity to find such land in an established area, but the new owners recognized its potential. A couple with pets, and eschewing a more traditional design, they wished for a one bedroom home, with a study and plenty of space for their art. The architect designed a simple, open plan house, mainly facing onto the back garden and river beyond. By deliberately utilizing floor to ceiling windows on 3 sides, the entire house is flooded with natural light, and gives visitors the effect of actually being outdoors. The first floor holds the generous kitchen / living area, a dining room, the study, and a guest bathroom which has the only interior door in the entire house. An open, steel and wood stair connects this level with the upstairs and stands in front of a 2-story wall of glass. The second floor is devoted to the extensive bedroom and master bath, as well as an abundant walk-in closet and laundry. In addition, a small deck off the bedroom offers stunning views of the river and nature. Natural materials of wood, stone and metal were used throughout, and in an effort to provide simplicity and continuity, the colors and textures of the exterior plaster walls were repeated internally. Although located in a popular neighborhood very close to downtown Sacramento, their new home has provided this high-powered couple with the necessary respite from their busy schedules. credit: designed by mark rusconi as principal in charge of design and construction documents. | $500k | Sacramento, CA
San Miguel Way Alterations | Jan 1995 | Other than removing a partition wall and re-plumbing the bath, the layout of this small east Sacramento bathroom remained the same. After total demolition of the space and some minor structural and electrical work, the project was mainly cosmetic. Walls and floors were covered in a soft-colored white marble. Clever use of mirrors and lighting enhances the size of the space, and custom-built mahogany cabinetry keeps the bathroom devoid of clutter. An antique, cast iron bath was purchased and re-finished, and the remaining fixtures and fittings are new and streamlined. All in all, a wonderful juxtaposition of materials and, more importantly a remodel that is both timeless and classic. credit: mark rusconi architects | $35k | Sacramento, CA
Knightsbridge Tudor | Jan 1991 | Located in a quiet cul-de-sac, this new re-built house conveys the air of an old British country home. When considerable acreage was subdivided into 4-5 lots, the client's parcel included a small hunting lodge! His request was to incorporate this lodge into a 5,000 square foot house, suitable for family and entertaining purposes. Being a great Anglophile, his wishes were for a design reminiscent of faded English grandeur, but with updated modern conveniences. The architect?s design reflects a typical English country residence which has evolved over the centuries. Under the new plans, extensive restoration work on the lodge was carried out, and where possible re-claimed materials were used. The new buildings, with their many gables, provided the client with some wonderful rooms under the eaves. Accommodation now includes a living room, fashioned from the old lodge, a wood paneled library with fireplace, a fully functional kitchen / family room, an elegant dining room capable of seating large parties, master bedroom and guest room suites, and 3 extra bedrooms and bathrooms. A covered loggia connects the back door of the house to the garage, over which are the maid's quarters. This walkway gives uninterrupted views across the sloping gardens to the creek that runs along the back of the property. Stunning gardens, by one of Sacramento's foremost landscape designers, further enhance the building's architecture. The entire project is a great example of the firm's motto-reuse, renew restore. Although grand in scale, this property's design philosophy can just as easily be adapted to much smaller projects, with equal success. credit: designed by mark rusconi as principal in charge. | $800k | Sacramento, CA
