Philharmonic House of Design 2015 | May 2015 | Please note the before photo of this room with the client's furniture who 'donated' the home to the philharmonic for use for the run of the project. This was then removed, and the room transformed for 'the show'. I was able to have all my changes to the room approved, included adding a ceiling design detail to the coffer that I had drawn, and then had reproduced in flexible resin molding to look like wood. Once this was applied to the ceiling, the flat and raised portion of the upper ceiling was painstakingly silver leafed, and then glazed to soften the silver with a dilute warm gold. The wood molding was similarly leafed and gilded, giving the ceiling much needed height. The walls were then treated with a metallic plaster finish. Once completed, it was taped off and a stripe effect was created by applying a pearl overlay in between the taped striped off areas. This provides the illusion of height and grandeur to the previously dark room. Banded draperies were added to the doors to provide additional height, and to obscure the wood framing of the doors, thereby maintaining the light, opalescent ambiance. A tall mirror was designed for one corner of the room to provide reflection of the romantic 1/3 life 'Joie de Vivre' sculpture at the far end by noted sculptor Richard MacDonald. A Lucite base table table by Century floats a beautiful burl dining table top with ample seating for ten. All white chair upholstery takes on a new look with chair 'runners' created of opulent silk, able to be changed to fit the season or occasion of the moment, with creative table settings to coordinate. A regency style Baker lacquer bar in the corner is the perfect size, once opened, to provide table side drink and wine service, beautifully reflected with the low voltage, lighted interior. Custom deco art and seascapes provide just enough color to play off the pearlescent walls without overwhelming the diners as they enjoy their meal with the reflection of sparkling crystal overhead. After dinner, the trickling fountain and lovely walkways of the exterior passages beckon for an after dinner stroll, or drink in the cozy seating area. The cost amount was the donation amount we spent to complete the room with purchased goods at special discount, discounted and donated labor, and loaned product. Had goods been purchased, the value of the room at wholesale cost plus 20% mark up would have been approximately $56,000.00 | $21k | Irvine, CA | |
