Atherton Residence

Sep 2013

This acre and one-quarter flag lot in the flats of Atherton, graced with many mature live oaks provided the setting for this PPG designed home. Pedersen Associates provided detailing for joining the building to the site. San Francisco cobblestone terrace walls were used to nestle the building into the site. The material was then wrapped around the entire entry. A generous fireplace provides a gracious entertaing area off the family room. On axis is a large formal fireplace with the outdoor kitchen tucked behind. A cabana and swimming pool located in the sunny portion of the site allow ample space for outdoor play. Rich perennial and annual color beds articulate walks and outdoor spaces.

Pedersen Associates worked closely with the architect during the schematic design phase to develop a complimentary relationship between the residence and its site location. The placement of a deck over a cabana, coupled with the use of water as a unifying element, create a seamless relationship between building and setting. The trellis element defines the entry and is repeated on the south elevation, shading the living and dining room windows. The deck railing borrows from the clean detailing of the residence. The garden spills down the slope to a flagstone patio next to a curving infinity-edge pool that, when viewed from the cabana, creates an unbroken water-to-water vista. The flagstone and large placement boulders act as a counter-point to the smooth vertical concrete surfaces. Although this California garden was designed to minimize water use, the need for an active play area for the owner's three children necessitated a lawn. The approach was to treat the lawn and pool as a contiguous composition, to be viewed from above. The main plantings are grasses, salvia, echium and rosemary, interspersed with flowering ground covers.
