Whole Home Remodel for Wheelchair Bound Veteran

Aug 2016

The client is a disabled, wheelchair-bound American veteran with multiple sclerosis caused by chemical exposure during her military service. She loves to cook, and was unable to do so in her existing kitchen. She faced many challenges, from the inability to reach the storage spaces in her cabinets, to the inaccessible configuration of her refrigerator and freezer space, to the dangerous placement of the controls on her existing range top, and the unreachable sink area that prevented her from cleaning the dishes. Also, prior to her disability, she had created art work on the upper cabinets of her kitchen and she did not want to lose that artwork, which she could no longer do from her wheelchair-bound position. The existing flooring was worn and not wheelchair-friendly. The existing lighting was inadequate. The existing pantry was completely lacking in accessible storage space and the door opened out into the small kitchen, restricting the space and preventing her from being able to move around in her wheelchair.

Accessible Cottage Remodel

Jan 2016

The project was completed for a veteran in his 60’s and his wife living in a single family cottage in a rural community. The veteran is diagnosed with ALS, wheelchair bound and preparing for a hospital bed in the master bedroom. The home is raised but the surrounding property is low and holds water. A whole home modification was needed for wheelchair access, along with a covered area to park and access his vehicle. A long driveway out to the road was necessary so that emergency vehicles could get to the home. The veteran could no longer use a traditional bathtub or a lavatory. The island in the center of the kitchen obscured the pathway and was too high for functionality from the chair. An addition was needed as no space in the home would allow for full wheelchair access and the installation of a wheelchair-accessible bathroom with a barrier-free shower. Redesigning the kitchen was necessary to open a pathway through the kitchen and to enable access to the back porch, where the veteran likes to grill. A ramp system and additional emergency exit were needed that would allow the veteran to exit from his bedroom/bathroom suite.
