Net Shed Wetroom | Oct 2013 | This new 8'x8' bathroom and kitchen, built in an historic net shed, is inspired by its context. The exterior is wrapped in reclaimed Douglas Fir boards with gaps that reference the Net shed's board and batten siding that reveals light through gaps in the boards during summer months when the wood has dried. A hatch is cut in the floor of the bathroom allowing a framed view of the river and reflected light from the river below into the room. The aluminum plate and translucent fiberglass of the bathroom's interior were chosen to respond to the aqueous environment below. | $10k | Astoria, OR
Lobster Boat Residence | Jan 2008 | Located on a dense urban shoreline site, this residence is built on an existing daylight basement, and celebrates its setting while providing privacy to its family. The stair is located on the south facing street frontage, providing filtered views into and out of the residence. The constraints of site and footprint result in an efficient vertical house rising four floors and a roof deck reaching the maximum allowable height. A variety of indoor and outdoor spaces are provided with composed views of Portage Bay. Economical materials such as raw cedar, steel, and integral color cement panel siding, are intentionally honest and hardworking. The Lobster Boat is a metaphor for a house that is economical, purposeful, and durable. | $350k | Seattle, WA
Vineyard Residence | Jan 2007 | The new 2,500 SF residence and 900 SF detached garage / studio apartment are designed to open up to the landscape on a narrow lot in the Napa Valley facilitating an indoor outdoor lifestyle. Interior finishes are warm, natural, and relevant to the region. The smooth stucco exterior of the residence is a backdrop that reflects the changing colors and light of the sky. A micro vineyard and olive grove fill the site surrounding the structures and swimming pool. | $900k | Calistoga, CA
CD Studio | Jan 2006 | A new 1000 SF detached studio adjacent to an existing residence is built as a hybrid building that can serve as a garage, studio, and possibly a future residence. Industrial materials and products are used in new ways such as polycarbonate steel plate siding, and tinted concrete. Steel double-dutch doors that are typically used in Kentucky for horse stables open up 3 sides of the lower floor to the exterior. Asphalt plank flooring seen in post office sorting rooms is used. A green roof deck wraps around the building. | $120k | Seattle, WA
Wood Block Residence | Oct 2013 | This house is a complete reconstruction of one of iconic Seattle architect Fred Bassetti's earliest designs. While appreciating the classic modern structure, the owners wanted to open up the floor plan, update all finishes, and tailor the home to suit their interests and lifestyle. Our goal was to respect the original intent and spirit of the design while making the house reflective of its owners, of its time, and a celebration of its place. Materials throughout are natural but installed and crafted in an extremely crisp manner. | Mercer Island, WA
Cycle House | Jan 2012 | This new 2,500 square foot house is designed to maximize panoramic views of Lake Washington and for the storage and maintenance of 18 bicycles. Decks and patios at every level allow for a continuous flow from the indoors out. The upper roof deck is designed for entertaining, sheltered reading, and outdoor sleeping. Materials are a contrast of black and white with natural wood and steel accents. | Seattle, WA
Beet Residence | Jan 2009 | The owners love art, cooking, gardening, and rusted steel and wanted their house to celebrate those things. Built on an existing foundation, the design uses Corten steel clad walls to bracket two floors with views through the house from front to back. The interior walls provide space for a growing art collection. Materials are left natural and meant to be the background to art and life. | Seattle, WA |
