Mount Horeb Studio

Jun 2012

A rural retreat and studio, the living spaces are on the second level to take advantage of views on the wooded site, while the ground level contains storage for the owner's gardening tools. The lower level is built into the side of the hill on the north side, with the south side fully exposed for passive solar gain. Cedar board and batten siding, stone veneer, a metal roof and galvanized metal stair risers are rustic and natural, yet also clean and modern. The living spaces are open, and the vaulted ceiling provides a sense of drama.

Spring Green Duplex

Sep 2006

This duplex was designed for a client who wanted to have rental income and someone who would keep an eye on the property when he's not there. It was designed so that it can easily be converted to a single family home in the future, if the owner desires. On the exterior, it could easily pass for a single family home. The tenant's entry is located on the driveway side of the house, while the owner's entry is located on one side, giving each one privacy. The main living spaces of both "units" are on the south side to capture the winter sun. A geothermal system provides heating.

The living area is sunny and inviting, with south-facing windows and overhangs sized to allow the winter sun but keep out the summer sun. Edges of the room are defined by broad soffits with up- and down-lighting, while the ceiling in the middle of the space is vaulted.
