Farrell Heating & Air Conditioning

I recommended Farrell Heating & Air Conditioning to my mother-in-law when her heat stopped working last week. They are a locally owned business, and had great reviews. She called them around 8am and they said they would be by as soon as they could. They arrived around 7pm (completely fine, glad they showed up). After a few minutes of troubleshooting they determined she had a bad run capacitor on her blower motor. At this point they informed her it was going to cost $175 for coming out and diagnosing the failure. If she wanted them to replace the failed part and get her heat working right then and there, it would be an additional $325. So, $175 for a service call and they find the issue within a matter of minutes - great! But an additional $325 for the technician to walk out to his truck for a $10 capacitor, (which took him no more than 5 minutes to replace) seems excessive. After I learned that she paid $500, and that they spent less than an hour at her house to fix the problem, I decided to give Farrell a call to better understand their service/repair fees. When I called I was greeted by the owner of the company, who was also the technician that was at her house. I asked him how the fees were determined. He explained quite simply - $175 service fee, plus $325 flat rate to replace the capacitor, equals $500. When I asked how the flat rate is determined he informed me that he does not have to explain the charges to me, “they are what they are.” After a little back and forth I told him that in an ideal world the service fee would go towards the repair and his response was, "An ideal world? This is not an ideal world, this is a world of making money.” CLEARLY, making money is all that this company cares about. If you are looking for someone to charge you $500 to replace a $10 capacitor and give you an attitude if you have any questions about it, then Farrell Heating and Air Conditioning is where you should turn.
