Contemporary Transformation

Mar 2014

This Queen Anne client had an overgrown front yard that was overgrown and no longer serving them. They had a front yard patio they liked to relax on but no longer liked what they were seeing when they did. They were looking for contemporary design of plantings that were low maintenance and low water usage, a screening for their front yard patio, and small water feature. The home was built in 2002 and featured prominent design elements they wanted incorporated into the new front yard. With a combination of a bamboo screen, pond-less water feature and new plantings, we were able to meet all their goals.

Southwest Flair

Aug 2011

This home is located in the Bryant neighborhood of north Seattle. The homes roof line, stucco styled siding, and arched window to the front door needed a yard that echoed its features. The client wanted a southwest inspired yard with stone, drought resistant plants resembling those from the region, small patio and a water feature. The front yards small area demanded each feature be prominent and hold its weight in the garden. Natural stone boulders were used to highlight each planting bed and a rustic flagstone was used for pathways and the patio. Cobble stone was used for the water feature and dry creek bed, giving it a natural feel while the water creates a consistent soothing sound for the homeowner and passerbys.

The Volunteer Park Cafe

Jul 2010

The Volunteer Park Cafe is located on north Capitol Hill in Seattle. The cafe was looking for a back yard patio for customers and neighbors to come sit and relax. The cafe also wanted space to grow their own vegetables for use in their seasonal entrees. The yard behind the cafe was an unused space that served more as storage than recreating. The yard was excavated and terraced with beds and walls built of natural stone and paved with re-claimed brick from a demolished historic building in downtown Seattle. Reclaimed timbers and doors were used to create a welcoming and rustic new entrance to the patio garden. Materials that were existing in the yard were re-used and reclaimed concrete was used for part of a wall and small patio near the building. This project was a great example of what can be done with reclaimed materials and environmentally conscious design.
