November, 2016 Giles / GB General Construction installed a new roof. Immediately, documented issues with the roof arose: - banging and rattling noises which continued for months - shingles and ridge vent blew off every section of the roof, multiple times, over many months - the banging noises were the wind picking up the shingles and then slapping back down on the roof deck; this continued for weeks, until the shingles ripped off the roof - in at least one spot (where the leak was) the shingles did not blow off, but were damaged due to bending up and back down, in the wind - shingles “slipped” down, out of line with other shingles - after shingles tore off one section 4 times, Giles put a tarp on that area, in February 2017, stating they would replace that entire section of the roof when the weather was warmer – they never did - 2” drip edge was replaced with 1”, allowing the metal fascia to “pop out” from under the drip edge, allowing water to penetrate the wood and structure - the rattling noises were the metal fascia, now loose due to the too short drip edge, banging against the structure - the roof edge on the ends looked like torn paper, not a clean, straight cut - an inordinate amount of nails were visible on the roof and ridge vent (none should be visible) - in the spring, a leak occurred (not near the section with the tarp) - nails were not completely driven into the roof preventing proper sealing and resulting in shingles bulging up - the roof looked bumpy and lumpy - Giles did not obtain a permit to perform roof work, as required by the town - view pictures on my giles roof period the usual (mygilesroof.com) At first, Giles responded promptly and replaced the blown off shingles. Then things slowed down and they left concerns unanswered. It took Giles one month to look at the leak and address shingles over that area of the house. This was in April 2017 and that is when the foreman was asked when the section with the tarp would be replaced. He could not say if or when, but made it a point to state the company had lost money on this job. Giles never addressed the rattling fascia, stating it was not their responsibility. In June 2017, CertainTeed, the shingle manufacturer, took shingles from the roof and tested the shingles. CertainTeed determined that the shingles were not faulty. The ongoing issues with the roof were a result of faulty workmanship, not an issue with the shingles themselves. An expert roof consultant was hired to evaluate the roof. Conclusion: the entire roof was installed wrong and would need to be completely redone. Another opinion was sought, a certified CertainTeed installer, who concluded the same. Giles would not take responsibility for their faulty workmanship, despite providing a 5-year warranty in the contract. An insurance claim with Giles’ insurance was filed, and denied. As a homeowner, protecting the home from the elements is of utmost concern. Therefore, although the issue with Giles was unresolved, the roof was replaced. This time by another contractor, S & G Roofing, who did a fabulous job. It took only one day, with a crew of six, as compared to Giles’ four days with crews of 3-5. The S & G roof lays flat, without any visible nails and no lumps or bumps. Giles required a 50% deposit up front – this is against New York State law. A contractor cannot require any money up front. The names on the contract were Giles / GB General Construction, but on the insurance certificates, GG Enterprises. Giles was given ample opportunities (four to date) to refund monies paid. To date, this has not happened and the issue with Giles remains unresolved.
