Kroning-Lowe Residence | Dec 2007 | This addition to the rear of an existing brick home maximizes usability in a small space, greatly increasing the owners enjoyment of their home. The first floor includes a home office and a sitting room with a vaulted ceiling and exposed beams. The second floor of the addition is a master bathroom, expanding the owners master suite. Throughout the addition, large windows allow for natural light, and built-in shelving and cabinetry provide the owner storage space without sacrificing the size of the rooms. | Chevy Chase, MD
Oxon Hill Manor | Dec 2007 | Oxon Hill Manor is a 49-room, Georgian-style structure on the National Registry of Historic Places. The house, built in 1928, has changed very little since its original design. Blackburns initial scope of work included an extensive building survey to determine the necessary repairs or upgrades to the exterior facade, historic wood windows, mechanical-electrical-plumbing systems, and building code deficiencies. However, the project was suddenly expanded following a catastrophic fire in 2004 that caused tremendous damage to the building. Extensive repairs and renovations were required, including interior restoration of all rooms in the house. All work was performed in compliance with the Secretary of the Interiors Standards for Historic Preservation. | Oxon Hill, MD
New River Bank Barn | Dec 2006 | Located on the banks of the Potomac River in Loudoun County, this renovated historic bank barn at River Farm is host to receptions, parties, and festivities for a family and their special guests. Originally built in the late 1800s, Blackburn Architects preserved much of the structure but reclad it in SIPs panels and new board-and-batten skin. The existing corncrib was converted into a sundeck with views of the horse farm to the west. The northeast facade was replaced with floor-to-ceiling glass, providing panoramic views of the Potomac from the main floor and loft. The project received an AIA Merit Award in Historic Resources and Southern Living Magazines Home Award in Historic Restoration. | Leesburg, VA
Devine Ranch | Jan 2006 | Located on an 80-acre site near the Pacific Ocean in the rolling hills of Aptos, California, the residence at Devine Ranch is designed to be mindful of the moderate climate and natural features of the landscape. The 7,000 square-foot residence, built with heavy timbers, copper gutters, glass, and Montana fieldstone, overlooks the ocean and orchards below. Interiors are by Gaye Ferraras of Ferraras Interiors. | Aptos, CA
Grant Residence + Art Studio | Dec 2000 | This three-bedroom residence and separate arts studio is built on land that has been in the Grant family since the Revolutionary War. In the residence, French doors lead out to a spacious screened porch on the west side, giving 180-degree panoramic views of the Ware River. Built-in china cabinets enhance the contemporary design of the interior while hardwood floors maintain the cottage style of the residence. The artist studio, also used as a guesthouse, contains one bedroom, a spacious foyer, and a cozy reading room. The studio design complements the residence, maintaining hardwood flooring throughout, while borrowing from the historic context of other structures on the Ware Neck peninsula. | Ware Neck, VA
Shriver Residence | Dec 1988 | Based on the romantic Colonial Revival style of Charles Platt, this 14,000 square foot residence faces south and fronts an expansive open lawn. The project includes a detached garage, pool pavilion, swimming pool, and tennis courts. The interior architecture is traditional in style but also integrates contemporary elements. | Potomac, MD |
