TXV stands for thermal expansion valve. A TXV is used in air conditioning systems and in heat pumps to change the state of the refrigerant (commonly called Freon) from a liquid to a gas. This change of state helps the air conditioner remove heat from the air. Modern, higher efficiency air conditioners and heat pumps use an EEV, electronic expansion valve. This does the same thing as a TXV, only more efficiently.
