Is your old doorway chipping, warping or showing its age? It may be time for a replacement, and the first step to adding a new doorway is to install a door frame. The frame provides support to the wall structure while creating a strong set of mounting points where the new door will attach.

The door frame consists of supports that reach the full height of the wall called king studs. King studs are installed at the outer edges of the door location, which provides full vertical support. Inside the king studs are shorter supports called jack studs. Jack studs are installed on each side of the door, and they extend from the bottom of the wall to the header over the door. The header above the door rests on the jack studs creating a solid framework on all three sides of the door.
There is much to consider before installation, such as materials, interior or exterior, weather proofing and tool expense. The frame is designed for longevity, and to construct it from a better grade of wood could save money in the long run. The construction materials will also vary according to the size of the door and the height of the wall. If the door is wider than normal, or the wall is extra tall, then the studs or headers are longer, and their costs may be higher.
One of the requirements for proper installation is that the sides are perfectly plumbed, and all corners are precisely squared, even if the wall is not. Since the requirements are so stringent, most homeowners turn to a construction specialist. A professional installer has the necessary tools and expertise to ensure that the frame is accurately installed.
