Labor costs of shower door installation

Shower glass door installation costs will vary depending on the style and whether you’re installing just the door or the entire enclosure. Be sure to consider all the additional factors listed above to come up with a realistic budget.

The labor cost for installing a framed sliding door for a 60” shower averages around $100, while installing a frameless hinged door is between $300 and $400 because it is a more complex installation. The more complex the installation, the higher the cost.

Shower door prices

Glass shower doors can range as much in price as they can in style. Here are some of the most popular styles, including their average price and cost of installation:

Frameless

Frameless glass shower doors consist of solid panes of tempered glass, fixed in place by a series of hinges and clips, without a metal frame. They add a sleek and relatively low-maintenance accent to your bathroom. The cost to install a glass shower without a frame ranges in price from $170 for a hinged door to $1,029 for a bypass door.

Framed

Framed glass shower doors consist of panes of glass that feature metal frames, with hinges or sliding components attached. With its nice, smooth lines, the cost to install a glass shower door of this type ranges from $300 to $400, depending on whether you want a hinged or sliding door.

Semi-framed

A semi-framed glass shower door has metal around the entire shower enclosure, but not around the door itself. This framing option offers a nice hybrid between the first two types, while still being budget-friendly at an average price of $350 to $700.

Curved, neo-angle, and other custom

Curved glass shower doors are modern, stylish, and well-suited for smaller spaces or corner placement. Framed styles typically start at $275, while frameless options start at $499.

Neo-angle glass shower doors are typically installed in the corners of small shower spaces, rather than along a wall. Neo-angle shower doors typically average between $400 and $1500, depending on the size.

Custom glass shower doors are specifically designed with the customer’s needs in mind, in addition to being an elegant solution to the problem of awkward spaces. Since custom glass shower doors are non-standard, the cost to install a glass shower door with a custom design ranges from $1400 to $3000.

Bypass

Bypass - or sliding - glass shower doors are set in metal tracks running along the broad side of a shower or bathtub enclosure. Depending on the style, material, or size, they range in price from $400 to $2000.

Swing

Swinging shower doors are similar to hinged doors, except they can open forwards or backward by way of hinges that attach to the floor and ceiling of the shower enclosure. The average cost of installing a swinging shower door ranges between $900 and $1500, depending on the size and style.

Hinged

Unlike swinging doors, a hinged glass shower door features hinges along its side and only opens in one direction. The average cost to install a glass shower door with hinges is between $200 and $800, depending on the style and size.

Bifold

Bi-fold glass shower doors are hinged on one side and in the middle, so the door can be folded to create a barrier-free enclosure. This type of shower door, aside from offering a stylish aesthetic, is ideal for wheelchair-accessible showers. The typical average cost of bifold glass shower doors, without the added cost of installation, is between $450 and $850.

French

French glass shower doors, which can be hinged or swing type, typically feature multiple panes of glass connected by a metal grille. This style of glass shower door is charming, offering a traditional aesthetic to your bathroom. The average cost of installing glass shower doors in the french style ranges from $750 to $2,000.

Inline

Inline shower doors can be installed to take the place of a fourth wall, or they can be flush with the rest of a glass wall. Inline shower doors typically cost between $600 to $800.

Shower enclosure costs

Shower doors require a shower enclosure. By creating a shower enclosure, you have an opportunity to make your bathroom comfortable, functional, and stylish. With so many design and material options to choose from, the average cost of an entire shower enclosure is between $2,000 and $5,000.

Tempered glass vs. laminated glass

Bathrooms see a lot of traffic on a daily basis, so glass shower enclosures need to be made from tempered or laminated safety glass. Tempered glass is standard glass that has been treated with heat or chemicals to become four times stronger and safer. When broken, tempered glass will shatter into small glass nuggets instead of dangerous shards.

Laminated glass is created by laminating layers of glass and vinyl through the use of heat and pressure. While tempered glass must be made to order from the start, laminated glass can be cut after it is made and will hold its shape when broken.

Shower door finishes

Along with the many styles of glass shower doors, there are also many glass finishes. Different finishes can be applied to both laminated and tempered shower doors. Whether you are creating a brand-new shower enclosure or replacing your existing glass shower doors, choosing from the many different finishes can give your shower enclosure a beautiful look.

Here are some of the more popular finishes for glass shower doors, along with their average costs.

Clear

Clear glass shower doors give a modern, upscale look to your bathroom but will need to be squeegeed clean on a regular basis. A clear glass shower door can cost anywhere from $300 to $1,000 depending on the style and make of door.

Low-iron

Low-iron glass shower doors are 5-6% more transparent than regular clear glass shower doors. The low-iron content removes the greenish tint often seen in clear glass. Low-iron shower glass typically costs $10 to $15 more per square foot than regular clear glass.

Tinted

Shower glass can be tinted in any color. This is usually done by adding a decorative film over the glass of the door to change the look of your shower door. Tints in green or blue will suit a beach-décor bathroom, and greys or blacks suit a vintage or modern bathroom style.

Frosted

Frosted glass shower doors offer a level of privacy in the shower, but can make your room look smaller and not quite as bright. Frosted glass shower doors are great for bathrooms with multiple users and don't need cleaning as often as clear shower doors do. Typically, frosted glass shower doors cost between $280 and $950 depending on style and size.

Rain glass

A shower door made with rain glass looks like it is streaked with fresh raindrops frozen in place. Rain glass shower doors are frosted and offer privacy while still allowing light through. Rain glass shower door typically cost $125 to $200 more than a clear glass shower door.

Textured

Textured and patterned glass shower doors can be found in so many different styles. Look for bamboo patterns, glacier styles, or other nature themed patterns. Patterned glass shower doors start at $300 to $400. Look for glass doors with a frosted pattern instead of texture for an elegant look.

Cost factors to consider when replacing your shower door

There are several factors to consider in the cost to replace a shower door. Here’s a quick list of the factors that will influence the overall cost of your project.

  • Bathroom design - This considers the space your shower is in and whether it’s a separate shower stall or part of a bathtub enclosure.
  • Door size - Is the shower space small, or on the larger side? Larger glass doors are more expensive.
  • Door type - A frosted, framed door is the least expensive option, but clear glass may suit your needs better. Likewise, bifold or sliding doors will cost more than a simple hinged door.
  • Glass type & styles - The type and style of glass you choose will not only influence the look of your bathroom but also the cost of the project.
  • Other materials - There are always extra materials needed, such as hinges and other fixtures. Make sure you plan for these additional parts in your projected budget.
  • Labor/time - A more complex project will naturally cost more than a standard design with a simple installation.

Shower Door Installation Project in Seattle 98109
Hello,
I'm looking to replace four (4) fixed frame glass shower doors with trim for a medical project in Seattle. Attached are photos and dimensions for the existing shower doors and trim we are trying to match with new doors. Could you please provide a quote for the following shower doors and frames.
Two (2) of the doors are single swing doors. We would like
• obscure glass with a polished aluminum frame finish.
• Door handle is back-to-back pull handles.
• The first with a rough opening of WIDTH 31-5/8" (bottom) & 32-1/4" (top) and HEIGHT
• The second with rough opening of WIDTH 31-5/8" (bottom) & 32" (top) and HEIGHT
For the other two (2) openings we would like a 3' swing door with a fixed panel. We would like
• Both these doors have a rough opening of WIDTH 45-1/4" (bottom) & 45-3/4" (top) and HEIGHT
Since all the existing shower openings are smaller at the bottom than the top, do you supply some kind of slider panel to plumb the showers into place?
In addition, all doors should include a track or flat stock that runs through the bottom of the door opening to cover any existing damage or fastener holes.
Thanks for getting back to me.
Best,
Gordon Krippaehne
